Once home to the Calapooia Tribe, Aumsville lies on what was formerly the pioneer farm of Henry L. Turner. The settlement that developed was named after his son-in-law, Aumus, who died in 1863, with the town of Aumsville officially incorporated in 1911.

Aumsville is a tranquil destination to rent an RV and explore the picturesque cascades of the Silver Falls State Park or birdwatch in the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge. It’s also within easy access of thrilling white-water rafting and wineries where you can taste the days away, with a corn festival igniting the town every August.

Discover Aumsville

The Great Outdoors

Aumsville is a great base for exploring the Silver Falls State Park, which is the largest state park in Oregon and renowned for its stunning waterfalls. It’s home to more than 24 miles of walking trails, including the nine-mile-long Trail of Ten Falls that accesses many of the cascades. Be sure to admire the 177-foot-high South Falls or venture to the more remote Double Falls, which plunges 178 feet into a deep side canyon of the Silver Creek Canyon.

Pick up your RV rental in Aumsville and drive west to the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses a large tract of open farmland and seasonal marshes in the fertile Willamette Valley. It provides an important habitat for wintering geese, with a particular focus on the dusky Canada goose, which nests almost exclusively in this area. Follow one of the boardwalks through the restored riparian forest and wet prairie habitats or bird watch from the Ankeny Hill Overlook and Eagle Marsh Kiosk.

If you’re looking for somewhere closer to Aumsville to stretch your legs, head to the Aumsville Ponds County Park, which protects 77 acres of wetlands within the Mill Creek Watershed. Stroll along the trail that leads around the main pond, crossing a couple of wooden bridges and flat-stone creeks to a small viewing platform or just relax with a picnic on the grassy lawns. It’s another good spot for bird watching, although visitors should keep in mind that no dogs are allowed.

It’s just a 20-minute drive to Salem, which has a more extensive range of services, together with a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

It’s packed with roller coasters and the biggest log ride in the Northwest, as well as a range of gentler rides for younger kids.
