Situated on the route of the historic Chisholm Trail about 80 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, Duncan now serves as the seat of Stephens County in southern Oklahoma. The town was officially established in 1892 with the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and flourished with the opening of oil wells in 1918.
Today, Duncan proudly celebrates its cattle ranching legacy at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center while being on the doorstep of wildlife refuges and hunting reserves. With numerous campgrounds in the immediate surrounds, it’s a great place to rent an RV while exploring everything the region has to offer.
Book a travel trailer rental in Duncan and make the short drive southwest to the Waurika Wildlife Management Area’s northern section near Walters. The Waurika WMA encompasses more than 10,500 acres in total, including floodplains, American elm and cottonwood bottomlands, as well as grassy uplands. It’s a hub for hunting, with bobwhite quail, white-tailed deer, and Rio Grande turkeys all present in large numbers, together with rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, and raccoons.
Just to the south lies Waurika Lake, a human-made reservoir that not only provides water to the city of Duncan but also supports a range of recreational activities. Six recreation areas are located along its 80 miles of shoreline, with boating and water skiing permitted on the lake itself. Try your luck at luring catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and sunfish, relax with a picnic at the children’s playground, or explore one of the walking and equestrian trails.
Around an hour’s drive west of Duncan is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Indiahoma, which was established in 1901 as a habitat for bison and a range of other wildlife. More than 800 plant species and 240 birds call the refuge “home,” together with over 30 fish species in its numerous lakes. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about the refuge’s various habitats, then head out to explore on the extensive trail system. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is also a popular rock climbing destination, particularly on Mt. Scott - the refuge’s second highest summit.

Aside from their tiled showers and restrooms, there are also laundry facilities so you can catch up on your washing, plus a clubhouse and Wi-Fi accessibility.

Book an RV rental near Duncan and head to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, which celebrates the cattle drivers who once traversed one of the Old West’s most important ranching trails. Discover how the cowboys lived while browsing the engaging exhibits and learn about Jesse Chisholm, a part-Cherokee trader after whom the trail was named. Test your lasso skills at the interactive Steer Ropin’ station and watch a film about the trail’s history, then admire the modern gallery of Western painting and sculpture.
Another destination where you can delve into the past is at the Stephens County Historical Museum where artifacts dating from the region’s early settlement are displayed. It occupies an old National Guard Armory in Fuqua Park and houses a large collection of memorabilia and personal items of oil businessman Erle P. Halliburton. Admire the stone-built architecture of its fortified exterior, then step inside to discover the musical talents of Oklahoma at the Rhythm & Routes Juke Box.
Duncan is also home to the Rock Island 905 Railroad Museum, which houses a beautifully restored old steam locomotive. Learn about its construction by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, with this 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive capable of reaching 100 miles an hour. The adjacent museum details the history of the railways in Oklahoma, and there’s a small gift shop where you can pick up train-related gifts.
