Once a tiny settlement founded alongside the Michigan Southern Air Railway, Wauseon grew along with railway trade, and in 1839, it replaced Ottokee as the seat of Fulton County. Throughout the 20th century, Wauseon continued to thrive as merchants moved to the city, and a 100-foot-wide road was made. Nowadays the city of Wauseon is an excellent place to search for an RV in Fulton County.

Its avenues are planted with native trees while the surrounding counties are brimming with wildlife and recreational activities. There are plenty of green spaces within the city, but when you book a luxury RV rental in Wauseon, you’ll also be able to visit the nearby state parks and wetland preserves. The city is easy to reach via Interstate 90.

Discover Wauseon

The Great Outdoors

The first thing you can do when you rent a motorhome in Wauseon is hop onto the Wabash Cannonball Trail. The trail was built upon the tracks of the former Norfolk Southern Railroad. It traverses small towns and rural areas in four counties. The trail is actually made from two railroads; the North Fork, which runs for 46 miles in an east-west direction from Montpelier to Maumee via Wauseon, and the South Fork, which is 15 miles long and connects Maumee to Liberty Center. The Wabash Cannonball Trail is a fantastic way to get off-road and discover northwest Ohio. The path is mostly wide and flat, making it suitable for cyclists, hikers, or horse riders.

One of the best places to spot local bird life is Springville Marsh State Nature Preserve, south of Wauseon and accessible via Interstate 75. This is one of the largest remaining wetland preserves in northwestern Ohio. The 200-acre preserve is made up of a combination of shrubby thickets, swamp woods, and sedge meadows. You can also discover large areas of cattail marshes which provide sanctuary for wildlife. The yellow-billed cuckoo, king rail, and American bittern are just a few of the rare and endangered species that you have a chance of spotting from the preserve's boardwalk. Over 110 species of bird have been spotted in the preserve, and large swamp sparrow populations come to breed in Springville Marsh each year.

If you’d like to swim in one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, then take your Wauseon RV rental east to Maumee Bay State Park on the banks of Lake Erie. The park is a hotspot for recreational water activities including sailing and canoeing. You can rent a canoe or rowboat inside the park or just relax on one of the two sandy beaches. The surrounding wetland also serves as a sanctuary for nesting birds as well as amphibians, reptiles, and painted turtles.

RV Parks

There are a handful of RV parks where you can camp with your RV rental near Wauseon. Sauder Village is a family-friendly RV park located within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and bakeries. This medium-sized campground is open from April to October and provides a mixture of sites with full hookups or electric-only hookups. On-site facilities include sports courts, a book share, and a pool. For kids, the park offers a splash park, outdoor playground, and organized scavenger hunts.

Alternatively, you can drive your Wauseon campervan rental to Bluegrass Campground in Swanton. The park is located between the southwest corner of Oak Openings Metropark giving campers direct access to forestry trails. RV sites are provided with full or partial hookups, plus access to washrooms and laundry facilities. Throughout the summer and on weekends, family activities are organized inside the park.

You could also park your RV alongside the Maumee River. Campfire RV Park is located just over 30 minutes' drive from Wauseon and a short walk from the river and Providence Metropark. The park offers sites with full hookups as well as shower blocks and a dump station.

Explore the City

Don’t forget to leave yourself some time to explore the center of Wauseon before the end of your vacation. You can grab a bite to eat in one of the city's restaurants. You’ll find a wide variety of cuisines from around the world as well as a number of coffee shops and bakeries. Alternatively, you can pick up cooking supplies from a grocery store in town.

If you want to learn more about the history of Fulton County, then you can make a visit to the Fulton County Historical Museum north of the city center. The museum was opened inside a former railway depot on the Michigan Southern Railroad and now houses railroad artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are also a handful of urban parks to take a stroll in. Reighard Park is one of the oldest in the city. It’s located in the center with the North Turkeyfoot Creek passing through the park. Aside from being a pleasant picnic spot, Reighard Park is popular with kids. You can take your little ones to burn some energy in the park's adventure playground and waterpark before returning to your camper rental in Wauseon.
