Sunbury, Ohio is located just a half hour’s drive from the state’s capital of Columbus, and while the Columbus Metropolitan Area is the second largest in Ohio behind Cincinnati, Sunbury feels a world away from the big city. Renting an RV in Sunbury is a great option if you’re not a fan of the crowded city, but still want to see all the attractions that it has to offer.

Unfortunately, public transportation doesn’t extend all the way out to Sunbury, with the bus system only running as far as Westerville, eight miles south of Sunbury. You can park your RV rental at the Northgate Plaza mall there and then continue into the city on the bus. If you want to get some exercise and feel the wind blowing through your hair, Columbus also has a bike sharing program with day passes costing less than $10.

RV Parks in Sunbury

While Renting an RV in Sunbury, OH is a great way to experience small-town life and save on camping fees, the area doesn’t have too many dedicated RV parks. Berkshire Lake Campground will be your closest option, just 3.5 miles west of town. There’s also the Sunbury/North Columbus KOA campground 8.5 north of Sunbury, which is a little out of the way, but as with other KOA campgrounds, they have a lot of amenities including a laundromat, gym, and canoe and kayak rentals. The Cross Creek Camping Resort is seven miles west of Sunbury, near the shore of Alum Creek Lake, and has events happening almost every weekend during the summer. With so much going on, it’s a great place to stay if you’re traveling with the kids.

It should be noted that there are no big box stores like Walmart, Target, or Costco in the immediate vicinity of Sunbury, so if you’re renting an RV here it’s best to stock up on provisions before heading to your campsite. You’ll also want to fuel up at the truck stops near I-71 and Highway 36 interchange, four miles to the west of Sunbury.

Exploring the City

There’s not too much to do in town, as the main advantage to renting an RV in Sunbury is that you can set up on the edge of all that activity in Columbus. However, if you’re in need of some retail therapy, the Tanger Outlets along I-71 has everything from Aeropostale to Zales and all varieties of stores in between. It’s the perfect place to spend the day if you love searching for a great deal. There’s also the Glass Rooster Cannery where you can find all sorts of unique foods and gifts to take home as souvenirs. They offer classes on canning your own fruits and vegetables too if you’re interested in preserving the delicious flavors from your fresh produce.

Most people get their city fix by taking day trips into Columbus, though. As the state capital and the home of Ohio State University, the city has a lot to offer in the way of fine dining, great shopping, and exciting entertainment options.

Getting Outside in Sunbury

One of the most popular places to spend some time outside is the Hoover Reservoir Park, ten miles south of Sunbury. The 4,700-acre park has a 27 hole disc golf course, a boardwalk along the lake’s mudflat for birdwatching, and you can find paddleboard rentals, lessons, and yoga classes there.

The Char-Ridge Preserve four miles to the southeast, in the town of Westerville, is a great place to visit if you need a little bit of quiet time in nature. Few tourists know about it so it still has a fairly rustic feel. The preserve has a mile and half long trail weaving through its hills and there’s a good chance you’ll spot some wildlife as you walk along it.

Given its close proximity, you will definitely want to take your RV rental to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, less than two hours to the northeast of Sunbury. The park has some excellent trails along the towpaths of the former Ohio and Erie Canal. Book an RV in Sunbury for a visit in October to see one of the most beautiful fall foliage displays, as the leaves on the Buckeye trees transition from green into varying shades of copper and gold.
