The small city of Niles is situated in Trumbull County, Ohio almost half-way between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, PA. Founded in 1806 by James Heaton when he established his iron-ore processing business in the area, which was the main economic driver in the new town. Industry diversified to include steel and glass, production but the manufacturing industry declined during the 1970s.

Niles is the birthplace of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States who was sadly assassinated in 1901. A memorial to McKinley was built in 1915 in the town to commemorate him.
