Located on highway 77, it is accessible from a number of larger towns and cities, the nearest being Parkersburg, WV - an easy 30-minute drive away. Marietta can also be reached from Cambridge in less than an hour and Columbus in less than two!

Founded in 1788 and once a station on the underground railway, this small town, built on the banks of a river is steeped in history. Due to its strategic location on the river, this once quaint village quickly grew to become a major trading center in the North West of Ohio. Today, travelers can visit Marietta to learn about this deep-rooted history in its numerous museums, annual festivals, and historical buildings. The Great Outdoors

The extensive trails, at a range of different difficulty levels, pull visitors from all over the state. The Marietta Trail Network has been commissioned by the council and is currently 15 miles long, with plans to expand! On the trail, bikers will be taken through miles of off-road terrain surrounded by wooded hills and beautiful valleys. If you don’t have your own bikes, head to one of the many touts in town that offers rental bikes for reasonable prices.

Would you rather leave the mountain biking to the experts? No problem! River Trail provides an alternative-walking route for those who wish to take a leisurely stroll through and around town. Currently, the trail measures at around 3 miles long but there are concrete plans to extend this significantly in the near future!

Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Center offers visitors a peaceful experience with the opportunity to really get amongst nature. This 800 acres of grassy meadows, cascading waterfalls, still ponds, and plenty of hiking trails is largely untouched. Better still, the sheer size of it means you will more than likely have a whole section of the park to yourself!

Whether you fancy setting up camp next to the river or up high in the valleys, there are campgrounds to suit everyone when you book an RV in Washington County. Marietta has a range of grocery stores including the known and loved Walmart Superstore, where overnight camping may be allowed.

If you are keen to camp next to the beautiful Ohio River, there are a few options to choose from. Landings Family Campground has plenty of sites scattered along the banks of the river. With full hook-ups and washroom facilities, this campground provides a very comfortable stay. Do be aware that sites fill up extremely quickly due to its much-adored views from. If you don’t manage to bag yourself a spot at Landings, try your luck at Castle Care Campground, located just down the road. This locally run campsite provides holidaymakers with sites on the banks of the Little Muskingum River, complete with full hooks ups for your RV rental from Marietta.

Further north, deeper into the valley, situated along the Muskingum River, you will find a few more campgrounds worthy of your time. Langs Campground and the Ashland RV Park both have excellent facilities, providing everything one could need for a relaxing stay.

Marietta has enough city attractions to keep even the most active traveler busy. Ranging from historical museums to religious artifacts, you are bound to find something in this town that will pique your interest.

The Castle Historic House Museum is a great place to start. Built in 1855, this gothic house offers tours to visitors including intriguing stories about the regions past. Available from April through to December, it is a cause worth supporting! Keep a look out for regular events held at the castle including cemetery tours, garden parties, and archaeological camps. Ohio River Museum also provides visitors with a glimpse into the area’s past. This museum houses rotating exhibitions that highlight the importance the river has played in the success of Marietta’s expansion as well as an extensive history of the different boats that have made their way through these rivers over the years.

Perhaps a more family-friendly activity would be a visit to the Anderson Hancock Planetarium, where you can quite literally broaden your horizons. As the theater is part of Marietta College, there is limited public access. However, it is well worth checking out their events page to find out the timings of the regular free public shows. If you happen to miss out on one of these shows, you will still be able to access the lobby area that has several informative displays including one centered on NASA programming.
