The unincorporated community of Houston, Ohio was first settled in the 1830s, named for Harvey Houston, the first person to subdivide and plat the land where the community now stands. Historically, Houston consisted of three communities before being lumped together: South Houston, North Houston, and Mount Jefferson.

The Great Outdoors

You won’t be disappointed when you decide to rent an RV in scenic Ohio, especially in the western section of the state. Even with a bevy of large metropolitan areas, Ohio still finds a way to lure city dwellers away for the weekend and charm them with delightful views and lakefront recreation. Lake Loramie State Park is one such place that deserves consideration, with lovely beaches and lots of secluded fishing spots where you can catch crappie, carp, bass, and catfish. Swimming, canoeing, boating, and waterskiing are fun ways to make the most of your trip when you camp out by the water in your Houston camper rental. Grand Lake St. Marys State Park is also located on the shores of a lake, ideal for sweltering summer days when all you want to do is lie in the shade or splash around in the refreshing water.

Indian Lake State Park is yet another fantastic place to consider when you rent an RV in Houston. Indian Lake State Park is quite close to Lake Loramie State Park, and by extension, easy to reach from Houston. There are several thousand acres to explore at this lush hideaway, with miles of lakeshore to lounge on and swim at. Boating, waterskiing, fishing, swimming, and BMX biking make this a must-visit destination when you rent an RV.

A ride out to Chillicothe is necessary if you want to see one of the country's most incredible heritage areas, with natural mound structures built over 2,000 years ago. These structures are fascinating to see up close, to better understand the ceremonial and religious uses for these epic monuments built by ancient indigenous peoples.

You can also bring your Houston RV rental to check out Tomorrow Stars RV Resort out in South Charleston. This campground has a massive swimming pool, sports courts, recreational fields, and a whole host of events, church services, fairs, and activities to occupy your time.

City Sightseeing

Houston might not be the most exciting place in the world, but it doesn’t hurt that Dayton is just minutes away to the south. You can visit some of the area’s most incredible places, like the National Museum of the US Air Force. This awe-inspiring institution pays homage to the aeronautical wing of the military, in a city with deeply rooted ties to airplanes, being the original birthplace of the Wright brothers. The advancement of aeronautics and aviation are recounted in the museum. Here there are countless decommissioned airplanes and fighter jets on display and a wealth of information about the Wright brothers’ first flight in North Carolina is offered, along with details of the modern technology of stealth bombers today.

The Dayton Art Institute has been around since 1919, housing a collection of masterpieces from different eras and cultures. The museum provides a foundation to grow and nurture a passion for art, and when you see the museum’s exhibits, you too will be left feeling inspired.

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is a different type of museum altogether, focusing more on the physical sciences and the natural world. This fabulous institution is an exceptional place to spend the afternoon, as it is a nature center, zoo, aquarium, observatory, history museum, and children’s museum all rolled into one convenient building.
