On the west bank of the Sandusky River lies the beautiful city of Fremont, Ohio. This self-proclaimed “Cutlery Capital of the World” was once home to several cutlery producing factories. The history of this fascinating city goes back to the time of Junquindundeh, a native Wyandot village and trading post founded centuries before the arrival of European explorers. When Ohio was admitted into the union, the territory was designated Indian Territory, and no settlers were permitted to move there, although many did so illegally. Later on, a fort was built on the river and the name Lower Sandusky was given to the town. This would later be changed to Fremont in honor of John C. Frémont, a war hero who helped acquire California during the Mexican-American War.

Fremont remains a friendly, historical, and cultured city to this day, with pleasant public parks, historic districts full of refurbished buildings, and a series of lively celebrations like the AEP Ohio Art & Music Fest, or the Sandusky County Arts and Music Festival. On top of all that, when you book an RV in Fremont, you are only a half an hour's drive from cities like Toledo and Sandusky, as well as the charming “Vacationland” area along Lake Erie, known for its fantastic summertime tourism.

The Great Outdoors

Fremont is in a favorable position for those seeking a healthy mix of city life and the great outdoors. When you rent an RV and head out of town, you can visit any number of incredible parks, like Maumee Bay State Park on the shores of Lake Erie. There is a resort for upscale stays at Maumee Bay, as well as rustic campgrounds. Furthermore, you can go hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, mountain biking, or golfing at this lakefront recreation haven or visit the park’s interesting nature center. East Harbor State Park is another fun place to spend a day or two, located on the Marblehead Peninsula in the middle of what is referred to as Vacationland. There is a marina on Lake Erie where you can store your boat, as well as a campground that is ideally situated near the water for you and your Fremont camper rental. With miles of hiking trails, beaches, swimming areas, secluded fishing spots, and a disc golf course, it's no wonder so many people choose to visit this gem of a park.

From the Marblehead Peninsula, you can actually bring your Fremont RV rental on a trip to Kelleys Island, home to Kelleys Island State Park. This incredible island is blanketed with natural areas, including an old quarry that has since been reclaimed by nature. Sunsets and sunrises on this enchanting island are part of the fun, and hiking throughout its iconic bluffs and valleys is an absolute pleasure. You can camp out on the island if you bring your RV, a great idea too as you will most likely seek to stay a few extra days once you see the scenery.

Back on the mainland, you can head east towards Cleveland in your Fremont luxury motorhome rental to see both the city and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This lush paradise is filled to the brim with natural beauty, and teeming with wildlife too. It may be small, but the park has dense forest groves you can meander through, rocky gorges to explore, and cascading waterfalls deep in the center of the woods. Camping is possible at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a stunning location that lets you reconnect with nature.

RV Parks

City Sightseeing

Saying Fremont is unique is an understatement. This unique town is dotted with historic buildings and old factories, remnants from the industrial period during which it was the world’s leading producer of cutlery. The dreamy avenues are lined with historic homes and businesses, and there are lots of restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, breweries, and other points of interest to visit during your stay. The Sandusky County Jail & Sheriff's House is housed in a glorious complex, with amazing masonry and ornate details.

Although the cutlery factories may be gone, the Heinz Ketchup Factory is located in Fremont. You can tour the factory, a historic building itself, and see the production of ketchup and other food items.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museum is dedicated to the 19th president of the United States. Guests of the museum can tour the 25-acre estate and a 31-room Victorian mansion where the president once lived. There are massive archives and genealogy records, exhibits about Hayes, and thousands of artifacts and pieces of furniture that belonged to the president’s family.

Fremont Speedway is a great place to spend a day if you are a fan of fast cars. This awesome racetrack at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds held its first race way back in 1936, and now hosts events for the National Sprint Tour. Races are typically held on Saturday nights.
