The town of Clyde lies in the north-central region of Ohio, about halfway between the cities of Cleveland and Toledo. Its proximity to these two cities and the shores of Lake Erie means that you’ll always have something to do when you book an RV in Clyde.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Clyde was famous for building cars and was the home of the Elmore Manufacturing Company. While that may not be a household name today, they were prominent during the “Brass Era” of automobiles, before Henry Ford and General Motors became the biggest players in the industry. Clyde has held on to its manufacturing roots though. Clyde is also known for serving as the inspiration for the Winesburg, Ohio collection of stories by Sherwood Anderson.
When visiting north-central Ohio with a camper rental from Clyde, Lake Erie is the obvious choice for outdoor recreation. While the Great Lakes are known for their big waves and high winds, the protected coves around nearby Sandusky Bay are perfect for swimming or paddling a kayak. Pickerel Creek and Willow Point Wildlife Areas are both great places to experience the unique wetland ecology on the shores of Lake Erie.
Another favorite spot for enjoying nature near Clyde is Blue Heron Nature Preserve. The 160-acre park is just off Highway 6 and has a mile-long boardwalk jutting out into the park’s wetlands. Visitors are mostly local, so you don't need to worry about encountering crowds of tourists while doing some bird watching here.
If dark and damp places intrigue you, then you’ll surely want to stop at the Seneca Caverns near Bellevue. Local rangers give a physically demanding tour of the cave where you’ll have the chance to see stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground river. There’s a lot of crawling and slipping through narrow passageways though, so come prepared with proper clothing and footwear.
If you’re hoping to get a tee time when with your RV rental in Clyde, there are a number of great golf courses in the surrounded area. Most are small municipal courses, but there are few upscale spots along Lake Erie.
In the rural landscapes around Clyde, there are tons of places to camp, from amenity-filled RV resorts to quiet campgrounds on Lake Erie. Gotta Getaway RV Park in Bellevue is one of the closest parks when you choose a camper rental in Clyde and is just a short drive down Route 20. Sites have water and electrical hookups along with fire rings to enjoy in the evening. There are a couple of good museums in the Bellevue area that are worth visiting, making this a good place to stay if you’re any kind of a history buff.
Another option for the motorhome rental in Clyde is the Fort Firelands RV Resort on the southern shore of Lake Erie. The centerpiece of the park is a replica of an 1800’s-style frontier fort, but they also have full hookups, a swimming pool, laundry facilities, hot showers, and a mini-golf course. If you want to get out on the lake, boat rentals are also available nearby.
For accessibility when you get a travel trailer rental in Clyde, consider Milan Travel Park just off the Ohio Turnpike. The park offers full hookups, along with a swimming pool, laundry facilities, and some nice picnic facilities. If you’re thinking about visiting any of the attractions in Cleveland, Milan Travel Park is about halfway between there and Clyde.
Something you probably wouldn’t expect in this corner of rural Ohio is a Presidential Library. However, Rutherford B. Hayes (U.S. President from 1877-1881) died in Fremont, which isn’t too far from Clyde. A tour of the library includes the President’s 31-room Victorian mansion, his tomb, a museum dedicated to his life, and the library itself. You can even see a replica of the Resolute Desk, where the president would sit during his days in the Oval Office.
Another interesting historical site in the area is the Mad River Museum in Bellevue, which tells the story of the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad that ran through the town in the 1800s. The rail yard is chock-full of vintage train cars from locomotives to side dumping freight cars. If you or someone in your family is a train enthusiast, this is a must-see.
If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of a jail cell looks like, you’ll want to stop in at the old Sandusky County Jail in Fremont. Its interior looks positively medieval by today’s standards with most of the cells being located in a dark dungeon. Many urban legends and ghost stories suggest that the jail is haunted so don’t visit if you frighten easily. Otherwise, it’s an interesting look at what life was like for prisoners in the 1800s.
