Home to the East Carolina University, Greenville serves as the seat of Pitt County on the south bank of the Tar River, an hour's drive northeast of Goldsboro. It’s been nicknamed “BMX Pro Town USA” due to the number of professional BMX riders it has produced and provides an entertainment hub for residents of North Carolina’s Tidewater and Coastal Plains regions.

Greenville was founded in 1771 as Martinsborough, with its name changed 15 years later in honor of the American Revolutionary War hero, General Nathanael Greene. It developed into a major cotton export center during the 19th century before becoming the state’s leading marketer of tobacco.

Today, Greenville is a thriving university city that’s within easy access of protected forests and coastal wetlands while being less than two hours' drive from Raleigh and Wilmington. Its proximity to recreational pursuits and family-friendly campgrounds makes it an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring eastern North Carolina.

Discover Greenville

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Greenville and head to the River Park North, a 324-acre nature area that sprawls on the northern edge of the city. Cast a line to see what’s biting in one of the five fishing ponds or rent a pedal boat to explore the waterways at your leisure. Aside from hiking trails, a fossil pit, and a sand volleyball court, the park is also home to the Walter L. Stasavich Science & Nature Center where you can get hands-on with a range of wildlife exhibits.

Around an hour’s drive south of Greenville is the Croatan National Forest, which covers almost 160,000 acres of land along North Carolina’s Atlantic coast. It encompasses impressive pine forests, salt estuaries, and bird-filled pocosins that can be explored along the numerous trails that wind through the reserve. Embark on the 21-mile-long Neusiok Trail that forms part of the extensive Mountains-to-Sea Trail or get dirty while off-roading and mountain biking along the Black Swamp OHV Trail.

Alternatively, head east to the Goose Creek State Park, which hugs the north bank of Pamlico Sound. It’s a hub for boating and fishing, with easy water access from Dinah’s Landing and yellow perch, largemouth bass, and bluegill all for the taking. Hiking trails also wind through the park, including the Palmetto Boardwalk Trail that departs from the Environmental Education Center, the Goose Creek Trail that meanders through a cypress swamp, and the Flatty Creek Trail that explores the park’s brackish wetlands.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Greenville and make the short drive east to the Whispering Oaks RV Resort, which features 15 campsites nestled beneath 100-year-old oak trees. There are both 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer hookups, with a kitchen and fishing pond also available to guests.

Also nearby is the Manning RV Campsites, a pet-friendly RV destination with full hookups and electric power. The campground features convenient pull-through sites and is near a public golf course.

Farther east lies the Tranter's Creek Resort & Campground, which offers full hookups with 20, 30, and 50-amp service. There’s a children’s playground and also a game room with a pool table and air hockey, as well as a swimming pool and a camp store where you can pick up essentials.

Exploring the City

If you’re interested in the local architecture, park your RV rental near Greenville and stroll through the College View Historic District, which is located adjacent to the campus of East Carolina University. It includes 343 contributing buildings that date from the early 20th century to World War II and has now been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Art enthusiasts should spend an afternoon at the Greenville Museum of Art, which showcases regional paintings, sculptures, pottery, and graphic design. It specializes in works by residents of North Carolina and fosters artistic creativity in the community through exhibitions, workshops, and family-oriented events. Join one of their monthly curator-led tours or yoga classes in the gallery, with a schedule of artist talks and lectures held throughout the year.

Enjoy a walk, run, or cycle along the South Tar River Greenway, which extends for just over three miles from the Town Common to Green Springs Park. It hugs the south bank of the Tar River, meandering through lush greenery and along residential streets. Alternatively, you can follow the Green Mill Run Greenway to take advantage of the playground, picnic area, or shuffleboard arena on its route or walk the short Stadium Greenway to see the East Carolina University Pirates football team compete at the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
