Originally named Jack’s Neck, Belhaven is a picturesque town where the Pantego Creek flows into the Pungo River. It was once a bustling industrial town on the back of the lumber trade and situated along a branch of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad.

Belhaven is still clustered with grand residences that date from the late 19th century and early 20th century, which make it an attractive place to rent an RV. It’s within easy access of family-friendly campgrounds, as well as the wildlife refuges and waterfront reserves of Pamlico Sound.

Discover Belhaven

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Belhaven and make the short drive east to the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses North Carolina’s largest natural lake, Lake Mattamuskeet. It’s home to the Lake Mattamuskeet Pump Station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as wetlands that provide a habitat for a diversity of wildlife species. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, black bears, and river otters while exploring the trails, together with neotropical migratory birds, ospreys, and bald eagles.

Drive in the other direction, and you’ll arrive at the Goose Creek State Park, which hugs the north bank of Pamlico Sound. Head to Dinah’s Landing to launch your boat, with yellow perch, largemouth bass, and bluegill all regularly caught here by anglers. If you prefer to explore on foot, follow the Palmetto Boardwalk Trail that departs from the Environmental Education Center or the Flatty Creek Trail that traverses the park’s brackish wetlands.

Just over an hour’s drive south of Belhaven is the Croatan National Forest, which sprawls across around 160,000 acres of land along the Atlantic coast. It comprises pine forests, salt estuaries, and bird-filled pocosins and is traversed by the 21-mile-long Neusiok Trail. Off-roading and mountain biking are permitted along the Black Swamp OHV Trail, with the forest also connecting along the extensive Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Belhaven and head west to the Twin Lakes RV & Camping Resort, which is located on a peninsula between the Pamlico River and Chocowinity Bay. This pet-friendly campground has a children’s playground and swimming pool, as well as on-site laundry, a basketball court, and Wi-Fi access.

Also nearby is the Tranter's Creek Resort & Campground, which offers full hookups with 20, 30, and 50-amp service. It’s kid-friendly, with a children’s playground and game room, not to mention a swimming pool and a camp store where you can pick up essentials.

Alternatively, head northeast to the Riverside Campground, which overlooks the Pungo River. There are full hookup sites and big rig access, with pets also welcome to stay with you.

You can also make the 30-minute drive into Washington to the local Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Belhaven and head to the River Forest Manor & Marina, a historic estate that was commissioned in 1899 by John Aaron Wilkinson. Its whitewashed architecture overlooks the confluence of the Pungo River and Pantego Creek, providing a stunning setting for weddings and events. Admire the ornate ceilings with carved plasterwork that were sculpted by Italian craftsmen or stroll through the picturesque grounds while soaking up the waterfront views.

Make a day trip to the historic town of Bath, which was established in 1705 on the banks of Bath Creek. It’s clustered with historic residences and buildings that include the oldest church in North Carolina, with an old-world atmosphere that’s hardly changed since the 18th century. Join a guided tour to discover the stories behind the Palmer-Marsh House and Van Der Veer House, with picturesque gardens and parks to explore along the way.

Belhaven also makes a good base for exploring Greenville, which is about an hour’s drive away. Stroll through the College View Historic District, which includes more than 300 contributing buildings that date from the early 20th century to World War II. Take note of the Colonial Revival and American Craftsman-style residences, then head to the Greenville Museum of Art where regional paintings, sculptures, and pottery works are showcased.

Belhaven is home to a small supermarket where you can pick up groceries, as well as a handful of restaurants if you want to dine out. There is also a gas station if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Belhaven.
