The city of Oneonta in New York is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate municipal division. The origin of the city's name is unclear, but it is thought to be part of the Mohawk indigenous language. Well before it was settled in 1775, Algonquin and Iroquoian tribes called the area home. After this date, lots of Dutch and German settlers begin to move to the area, bringing with them their own cultures.

There are a few museums worth checking out while you are in town, like the Swart-Wilcox House Museum. This lovely little cottage is a perfect example of Upstate New York architectural style, built back in the colonial times. The home was built by Revolutionary War veteran Lawrence Swart back in 1807 and is now a living museum that is both wheelchair accessible and informative.

Yager Museum of Art & Culture is another wonderful place to learn about New York living, and the city of Oneonta’s past culture as a whole. This exciting institution sits on a hill overlooking the town, and its walls are adorned with Venetian Renaissance paintings and Native American artifacts, making for an eclectic and vibrant collection of beauty from a variety of periods and countries.

If you head out of town and drive up to Cooperstown, you can see the legendary National Baseball Hall of Fame. This popular attraction is a huge hit with tourists, bringing in hundreds of thousands of baseball fanatics each year. There are baseball diamonds on-site, and a fabulous museum that contains 40,000 pieces of memorabilia, over a 100,000 rare baseball cards, and millions of other newspaper clippings and photographs helping to weave an elaborate tapestry of baseball, America’s pastime.
