Situated in the far north of New York State, Malone is the town and county seat of Franklin County. It was established in 1805 and originally named “Harison" after its founder, Richard Harison, before being changed to “Ezraville” and eventually “Malone” in 1812. It was sacked by British troops during the War of 1812 before the arrival of the Ogdensburg and Champlain Railroad in 1850 brought a flood of workers to the town and stimulated the dairy industry.

With the Salmon River running through its heart, Malone is a picturesque place to rent an RV while exploring northern New York. It’s well served by family-friendly RV parks while being just a 90-minute drive from the bright lights of Montreal in neighboring Canada.

Discover Malone

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome rental in Malone and drive south to the Deer River State Forest, which sprawls across more than 12,000 acres of interconnected wetlands. Follow the short Beaneville Trail that hugs the banks of the Deer River as it winds its way through the reserve, with impressive river rapids along the way. The Deer River State Forest lies adjacent to the Deer River Primitive Area and the Titusville Mountain State Forest on the edge of Lake Titus.

Continue driving southwest, and you’ll arrive at Adirondack Park, which was established in the late 19th century and encompasses the rugged Adirondack Mountains. It includes numerous villages, golf courses, ski areas, and fishing lakes, as well as plenty of hiking and snowmobiling trails to explore. Serious trekkers can challenge themselves to summit each of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks while those with kids should head to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake to learn about the natural history of the region.

Directly west of Malone is the Brasher Falls State Park, which together with the adjacent Bombay State Forest extends across more than 22,000 acres. An extensive trail system winds through the hardwood swamps and wetlands, with access for hikers, horseback riders, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. It’s also a popular birding area, with a huge diversity of both resident and migratory species often spotted here.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Malone and make the short drive east to the Ponderosa Campsite, which is one of the only campgrounds to offer ATV trail riding in New York State. It lies on 200 acres that are traversed by multi-use trails, with a range of electric, water, and sewer hookup sites to select from.

Alternatively, you can drive north to Constable and the Pine Ridge Park, which is situated on 60 acres overlooking the Salmon River. There are full hookups and a recreation hall available, as well as a swimming pool and a children’s playground to keep young guests entertained.

Another nearby option is the High Falls Park Campground where you can select from a range of grass-covered sites with 20, 30, or 50-amp hookups. There are plenty of picnic tables and fire pits also available, as well as a children’s playground, a volleyball court, and nature trails.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Malone and head to the Franklin County Historical Museum, which details the people and events that have shaped the region. Join a guided tour of the House of History that dates to 1863 and has been decorated as it would have appeared during the period. Browse the local history exhibits and artifacts on display, then peruse the collection at the Country Book Store.

If you’re interested in the Native American history of the region, make the short drive northwest to Hogansburg where you’ll find the Akwesasne Library and Cultural Center. Wander through the museum that celebrates the history of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation and discover the artistic talents of local Mohawk artists. A visit to Hogansburg can be combined with a stop at the Eisenhower Lock, which is one of the seven canal locks on the St. Lawrence River leg of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Visiting during the winter months? Head to the Titus Mountain Family Ski Center, which has won multiple awards for its family and beginner-friendly facilities. There are around 50 trails to explore across its three mountains, with ski rentals and lessons available. There’s also a snow tubing park that caters to young snow enthusiasts, as well as a learning center for beginners.
