If you think this small town in northern New Mexico sounds familiar, you would be right. It claimed its infamous place in history as being the location where the atomic bomb was originally developed. Santa Fe, the state's capital, is the nearest large town, and lies around 30 miles to the southeast. The much larger city of Albuquerque, is around 100 miles to the southwest, and Carson National Forest is less than 65 miles north.

Los Alamos, NM is found in a bit of a unique location, as it is surrounded by a forested, mountainous region, in this otherwise arid state. Due to this, several national forests surround the local area, all which provide plenty of recreational opportunities. National Monuments, museums and other natural and historical sites offer plenty of other opportunities for exploring. There are also plenty of local restaurants available nearby, each with their own unique flavor, as this state is known for its green chiles.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

The Bandelier National Monument is found on the Pajarito Plateau and includes the Jemez Volcanic field. Some scenic drives are available at the site, as well as numerous hiking trails. The attraction protects archaeological sites of the Pueblo people who once lived here. Some artifacts from that time are also featured. There is an elevation change of over 5000 feet from the park floor to the summit of the volcano, so numerous ecosystems can be observed at work.

Tsankawi is a specific hike at the Bandelier National Monument that lets you walk in the footsteps of the ancient people who originally lived here. You can actually walk the same footpaths that they created on the cliffs of the nearby mountains as you make your way to one of their many, former settlements. White Rock Overlook Park offers opportunities for picnicking and hiking. As its name suggests, the site provides expansive views as it overlooks a valley formed by the Rio Grand River. The Anderson Scenic Overlook is also found nearby. Both sites offer panoramic views of the mountains that surround the local area.

RV PARKS

White Rock RV Park is found about 10 miles away, in White Rock, New Mexico. The site is open year-round and offers electric hookups as well as a dump station. Please note, no reservations are accepted, so the sites are available first-come, first-serve. Please call for information if you are seeking a lengthy stay. The park is situated directly off the main route through town, so it should be easy to locate.

Trailer Ranch RV Resort is located in Santa Fe. This adults-only camp features all the usual amenities, though it does not offer cable. Bathrooms, showers and a laundry facility are provided, as is WiFi. Call for information regarding long-term and winter reservations.

Santa Fe Skies RV Park is also in Santa Fe. The park offers full-service sites as well as commanding views of the nearby Sangre De Cristo mountains. WiFi, a bathhouse, and laundry facilities are also available, as well as walking trails. The location of the park also offers easy access to all the activities found in the local area. EXPLORING THE CITY

There’s many interesting things to see near Los Alamos. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park provides historical information regarding the project.
