If ever there was a quintessential ski town, it would be Angel Fire, New Mexico. The community grew from nothing when the Angel Fire Ski Resort opened in the mid-1960s. Today the resort is one of the country’s premier ski areas, making Angel Fire and nearby Taos a destination for powder hounds.

Angel Fire is located about 150 miles from one of New Mexico’s largest cities, Albuquerque, and a two-hour drive from the capital of Santa Fe. Book an RV in Angel Fire and you'll be able to experience this beautiful section of northern New Mexico as it gives you the freedom to roam and enjoy all that nature has to offer here without worrying about finding accommodations in a popular tourist town.

Discover Angel Fire

The Great Outdoors

Angel Fire Resort draws skiers and snowboarders from around the country (and the world) to experience its powder-covered slopes and varied terrain. However, if you’re not into snow sports or are visiting during the summer with your Angel Fire travel trailer rental, there’s still plenty to do there including hiking, zip lining, and golf. The Carson National Forest between Angel Fire and Taos also has several trailheads right off Highway 64 that lead to some great hikes lasting anywhere from a few hours to multiple days.

The town of Eagle Nest is only about 15 miles from Angel Fire and centers around a stunningly beautiful lake and state park of the same name. During the summer months, this is an excellent place to go for a swim and the lake’s marina offers boat rentals and fishing tours. It is an alpine lake at an elevation of over 8,000 feet, so the water is likely to be somewhat cold year round.

For a scenic drive with the Angel Fire motorhome rental, check out the Enchanted Circle Byway, which begins in Taos and extends through Angel Fire and Eagle Nest and makes a loop back towards Taos. It’s a fascinating adventure through some of New Mexico’s highest mountains, the Sangre de Cristo and it’s especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves are changing colors.

RV Parks near Angel Fire

Despite being a relatively isolated community, Angel Fire has a number of great camping options within a short drive. Angel Fire RV Resort is just a few miles north of town, near the intersection with Highway 64, and has some nice amenities. Here you’ll find full hookups for your Angel Fire RV trailer rental, laundry facilities, showers, and lots of activities like Bingo, pickleball, and Saturday night dances. There’s also a small restaurant on the property if you don’t feel like cooking or driving into town to get some food.

The nearby Monte Verde RV Park has very similar amenities along with fire pits and a pavilion that can be used for group gatherings. They also sell propane.

If you are looking to do some rustic camping and don’t want to drive into town, there are a number of national forest sites available just off Highway 64. The forest service roads can be a little rough, but if you can find a place to park your Angel Fire RV rental, you’ll have plenty of quiet and solitude to be enjoyed there.

If you need to fuel up, there are a few smaller service stations in town, but truck stops and their accompanying dump stations will be found in Taos.

Exploring the Town of Angel Fire

Besides hitting up the ski hill, there’s not too much to do in Angel Fire itself. Getting an RV rental in Angel Fire is more about kicking back and enjoying nature but there are a few things in town worth checking out. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park is a fascinating tribute to our fallen service members and was created by a local family to honor their lost son. It was also the first memorial of its kind when it was built in 1971 and inspired the construction of the national memorial in Washington D.C. ten years later.

There’s not much for shopping opportunities in Angel Fire with just a handful of stores selling gift-type items along the main road. Most visitors will take trips into Taos to explore the many galleries, handicrafts emporiums, and gift shops as it’s an easy day trip. It’s a great place to find Native American jewelry and carvings but be sure to look for a label of authenticity to ensure you’re buying the real thing and not a knock-off import.

You will find quite a few great restaurants in Angel Fire offering everything from wood-fired pizza to smoky BBQ to spicy Mexican cuisine. For a great beer, check out the brewery in town, which also has a mouth-watering food menu.
