Incorporated as the Willingborough Township in 1798, Willingboro, New Jersey sprawls along the eastern banks of the Rancocas Creek on the outskirts of Philadelphia. The land was purchased by Abraham Levitt and Sons in the 1950s for their planned community of Levittown, with its name officially changed in 1959. Despite causing confusion with the town of Levittown (which was 12 miles away), it wasn’t until 1963 that Willingboro again adopted its original name.

Willingboro’s proximity to the American Revolutionary sites of Philadelphia and the sprawling forests of the New Jersey Pinelands makes it a popular place to rent an RV. It’s just a stone’s throw from creek-side parks and extensive hiking trails, not to mention the historic streets of nearby Mount Holly.

Discover Willingboro

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Willingboro and head to the Mill Creek Park, a 180-acre wooded and open space along the banks of Mill Creek. It’s home to two playgrounds, illuminated tennis courts, soccer and softball fields, as well as a cycling path and 2.5-mile-long nature trail. Cast a line to see what’s biting in the well-stocked fishing pond or coincide your visit with one of the festivals that regularly take place here.

You can make the short drive south to the Rancocas State Park near Hainesport, which encompasses a freshwater tidal marsh and woodlands surrounding the Rancocas Creek. Stretch your legs on the more than eight miles of hiking trails, which include a self-guided interpretive trail, or tackle one of the mountain biking trails. If you’re traveling with horses, you can enjoy a ride on one of the equestrian trails or soak up the serenity of the Rancocas Creek while canoeing and fishing.

Willingboro also makes a good base for exploring the extensive Wharton State Forest, which includes the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecoregion and the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. Visit the 18th-century bog iron and glass manufacturing site of Batsto Village and the restored Atsion Mansion or experience the park’s natural beauty on one of the forested trails. The Wharton State Forest is also just a stone’s throw from the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, which offers around 25 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing trails.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Willingboro and pull into the Timberland Lake Campground, which has a good selection of 50-amp RV sites, some with lakefront settings. Recreational facilities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, volleyball court, and mini golf facilities, as well as a private lake where guests can fish.

Also nearby is the Indian Rock RV Park & Campground, which nestles amidst a shaded forest of pines and oaks. Select from one of their spacious full-hookup sites and relax in the outdoor swimming pool, with a playground, recreational courts, and a mini-golf course to keep young guests entertained.

If you want to be in the heart of the New Jersey Pinelands, make the short drive south from Willingboro to the Wading Pines Camping Resort. There’s a range of full-hookup RV sites to select from, as well as a saltwater pool and a pond that’s well stocked with fish.

You can also take a 10-minute drive to Burlington and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Willingboro and make the short drive southeast to Mount Holly to explore its historical township. It’s home to 18th-century residences such as the Thomas Budd House, as well as the elegant Burlington County Courthouse and First Presbyterian Church. Visit the one-room Brainerd Schoolhouse that forms part of the Mount Holly Historic District, then tour the Burlington County Prison, which was the oldest operating prison in the United States when it closed in 1965.

Combine your visit to Mount Holly with a stop at the Smithville Mansion, the former home of industrialist, inventor, and entrepreneur, H.B. Smith. The mansion is now open to the public for guided tours, with a fascinating history and impressive Georgian and Victorian architectural features to discover. It’s also surrounded by a picturesque park that encompasses upland forests, meadows, and wetlands while centering around the 22-acre Smithville Lake.

Willingboro also makes an ideal base for exploring the sights of Philadelphia, including the red-brick Georgian architecture of Independence Hall and the famous Liberty Bell. Join a guided tour of the historic Eastern State Penitentiary or browse the outstanding collection of works at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Philadelphia is also renowned for its food scene, with a range of seasonal produce available at the Reading Terminal Market and famous Philly cheesesteaks sold throughout the city.
