One of the most affluent towns in the United States, Summit, New Jersey lies on the western outskirts of Newark. It was first settled by Europeans in 1710 as Turkey Hill before being known as the Heights over Springfield from the late 18th century. It was officially incorporated as the Township of Summit in 1869 and became a popular weekend and summer vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers.

Summit is still a popular getaway destination to this day, with fresh air and recreational parks that make it a welcome escape. It’s the ideal place to rent an RV while exploring the sights of Union County or as a base for visiting the big cities of Newark and New York.

Discover Summit

The Great Outdoors

Book a camper rental in Summit and drive south into the Watchung Reservation, a 1,945-acre nature reserve between the First Watchung and Second Watchung Mountains. It’s crisscrossed by numerous hiking and horseback riding trails, with a dam near the headwaters of Blue Brook creating Lake Surprise where visitors are welcome to fish. If you’re traveling with kids, they can let loose in the Loop Playground recreational area or visit the Trailside Nature & Science Center to learn about the local ecology.

On the western edge of Summit is the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge where migratory birds traveling along the eastern United States come to rest and refuel. It encompasses around 7,800 acres of swamplands and various other habitats that are home to deer, foxes, and raccoons. Keep your eyes peeled for American bitterns, red-headed woodpeckers, and blue jays, as well as red-shouldered hawks and barred owls.

Summit is also within easy access of the Passaic River Parkway, which comprises six small parks along the Passaic River. While most are largely undeveloped, at the southwesterly end of the parkway lies the Passaic River County Park, which is home to a variety of recreational facilities. Enjoy a stroll along the Glenhurst Meadows Nature Trail, cast a fishing line to see what’s biting, or rent a canoe to explore the waters of the Passaic River at your leisure.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Summit and drive east to the Liberty Harbor RV Park, which is the closest RV campsite to Manhattan Island. There are 50 RV sites and views towards the iconic skyline of New York City, as well as Wi-Fi, an on-site laundry facility, and a restaurant.

Military ID holders can also head to the Navy Earle MWR RV Park, although you’ll have to book ahead as there are just 15 RV sites available. Take advantage of the park’s 20, 30 and 50-amp services, then get involved with a variety of activities organized at the military base.
