Nestled alongside the South River, Spotswood, NJ was named by a Scottish gentleman, James Johnston, who was homesick for his hometown, “Spottiswoode.” Johnston, who was the first inhabitant, built a home and a mill in 1685. The town itself was officially founded in 1908. Spotswood has retained much of its old-town charm. Mature oaks and maples line its streets, and at Christmastime, the locals light the tree and sing Christmas carols at “the Triangle,” an unofficial name for the intersection of Main Street, Park Avenue, and Snowhill Road. The downtown main street didn’t even get sidewalks until the late 80s. Every Memorial Day, children and adults alike form a parade and march down Main Street.

This small bedroom community is conveniently close to dazzling New York City, the Jersey coastline, and several wilderness parks, making it an ideal place to rent an RV.

Discover Spotswood

The Great Outdoors

Though much of New Jersey has been overtaken by the suburbia, there are still pockets of wilderness. The state of New Jersey is diligently working on preserving them as well as obtaining new properties to return to its former wilder state. Your Spotswood camper rental will make it easy to explore all the nearby parks, as well as the larger state parks. The Van Nest Wildlife Refuge, which shares its boundaries with Mercer County Park, offers a few miles of hiking and biking trails. The refuge and park surround a small lake. The lake’s marina also has a boat rental center, at which boaters can rent kayaks, rowboats, or pedal boats.

A Spotswood luxury motorhome rental will let you cool off after a hot day at one of the nearby New Jersey Beaches. The Sandy Hook beaches, which was nearly destroyed by a disastrous hurricane in 2012, are a fantastic destination to visit. Not only are the Sandy Hook National Park beaches long and spacious, the inland portion also has a few miles of trails winding through sand dunes, marshes, and shrubby woods. Birdwatchers and avian photographers will enjoy searching for seabirds and shorebirds, such as sandpipers, plovers, “peeps,” turnstones, and even willets.

For something resembling true wilderness, hop into your RV rental and head down to central New Jersey. The Brendan T. Byrne State Forest (formerly known as Lebanon State Forest) has a varied terrain for hikers and outdoors-people to explore: deep pine woods, swamps, cranberry bogs, and rolling hills. There are over 25 miles of trails, a few of which are ADA-accessible. The Batona Trail, which is around 50 miles, links this park to Wharton and Bass River State Forests.

RV Parks

In this part of New Jersey, which is bristling with suburban and bedroom communities, has covenants and policies prohibiting campgrounds. Rent a motorhome in Spotswood and head south to where you’ll find more flexibility in locations. The Brendan T. Byrne State Forest features a family campground that is open year-round with restrooms, showers and laundry facilities available. There are no hookups, however.

Alternatively, Monmouth County Park System’s Turkey Swamp has a family campground in Freehold, that includes full hookups for your RV, facilities, and a lakeside view. Reserving in advance is recommended. Be warned, though, that in springtime, the woods around the lake can get very bog-like, particularly after a period of prolonged rain, and mosquitoes can be problematic.

Exploring the City

So close to the Big Apple, it’s easy to find an activity to fit the flavor of the day. Book an RV rental in Spotswood for ease to get around the town. Seeking pulse-pounding adventure? Runaway Rapids Water Park and Keansburg Amusement Park in Keansburg is a fun way to cool off on a hot day while still staying active. Between the two parks, there are nearly 100 different rides and activities to choose from. Fishermen can join in the fun, too; the old-school boardwalk fishing pier reaches out into the Atlantic Ocean. Try your luck at catching saltwater fish like bluefish, dogfish, mackerel, sea bass, and dozens more.

Thompson Park Zoo, also known as the Watertown Zoo, is an extension of New York State Zoo. Animals native to New York makes its home at this zoo, many of which are endangered or threatened. The resident Canadian Lynx is a part of the conservation efforts to improve its population and is also a zoo ambassador.

Store-bought produce cannot compare to fresh-off-the-farm fruits and vegetables. Delicious Orchards, a 100-years-old farm, has a market open to the public. So popular that the lines often stretch out the front door, the market features homemade baked goods, specialty apple-cider donuts, artisan cheeses, and just-plucked-out-of-the-ocean fish.
