The lovely little township of Sparta, New Jersey sits in the northern reaches of New Jersey between Scranton, PA and New York City. This historic old mining town was home to Lenape natives and later on, the Dutch colonists who settled in the area. Known for its iron, zinc, and limestone, mining is deeply ingrained in the history of the township, although most operations have since ceased. In 1926, a large structure was built to dam the Wallkill River which created Lake Mohawk, a now popular recreational community.

Sparta is bisected by New Jersey Route 15, which leads to Interstate 80. When you book an RV in Sparta, New Jersey, you can also utilize the excellent public transportation that enables you to kick back and see not only the town but also other communities in the north of New Jersey. Lakeland Bus Lines even provides commuter bus transportation to downtown Manhattan, so day trips to the Big Apple or to Newark are an exciting possibility when you rent an RV in Sparta.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

When most people think of northern New Jersey, they can only think of urban areas and dense suburbs lining the outer circles of the New York City metro area. Little do they know that the northern part of the state is teeming with spectacular sights and lovely nature trails, all of which can be visited quite easily in your Sparta motorhome rental. Seemingly every town has a park or waterfall to speak of, and Sparta is no exception.

In the heart of town, Sparta Glen Park is cherished by residents and visitors alike. Situated in a small ravine, you can climb to the peak of the park after a moderately short hike which will enable you to have stunning views of the surrounding valley as well as Lake Mohawk. Speaking of Lake Mohawk, you can visit this majestic lake and catch a glimpse of a sunset or sunrise over the shimmering waters, or even swim if you would like.

On the eastern edge of town, Rockaway River State Wildlife Management Area is popular for both hunting and fishing. Hiking and cross-country skiing in the winter are great in this sleepy forest, too.

Wawayanda State Park is north of town by about 30 miles and features dense coastal forests populated by incredible wildlife like the red-shouldered hawk and the great blue heron. You can even hike part of the great Appalachian Trail in this park, or swim in Wawayanda Lake which was formed by glaciers thousands of years ago.

Just over the border in New York State, Sterling Forest State Park awaits you and your Sparta RV rental in the majestic Ramapo Mountains. This park is just a baby compared to most as it was created in 1998. The park is an important habitat for songbirds, black bears, foxes, and many other animals that call it home.

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is the closest thing to a national park that you can find in the region. This outrageously beautiful park is full of towering cliffs overlooking raging river waters, as well as countless waterfalls. Canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, swimming, and many other activities are allowed and encouraged here. The park is also home to many amazing Native American archaeological sites.

City Attractions

The small township of Sparta has lots to do or see, especially if you enjoy eating, shopping, or visiting lovely little museums to inform yourself about the local history and culture. Sterling Hill Mining Museum also celebrates the history of Sparta mining and even has the state’s only remaining mine, and it’s open for tours. Kymer’s sister resort, Panther Lakes Camping Resort has lots of amenities, including a 45-acre lake that is fully stocked with fish. Relax on the sandy shores of the lake, or swim in the sizeable pool, either way, you will enjoy yourself. Most of the state parks, forests, and recreation areas have campgrounds as well so don’t be afraid to do a little bit of digging to find the perfect place to stay.
