Forming part of the New York metropolitan area, Rahway is a historically-rich city in New Jersey’s Union County. It was once home to the Lenni Lenape Native Americans before Europeans settled in 1664, with the town providing the backdrop to the American Revolutionary War’s Battle of Spanktown in 1777.

During the early 20th century, Rahway was established as a manufacturing hub. But following a decline in business after World War II, the city’s central business district has recently undergone an exciting revitalization, with new hotels, art galleries, and retail stores opening. It’s this combination of attractive urban spaces and the city’s proximity to the surrounding natural wonders that makes Rahway an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring southern New Jersey.

Discover Rahway

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Rahway and drive north to the Rahway River Park, one of the numerous green spaces that form the Rahway River Parkway. This greenway hugs the banks of the Rahway River and its tributaries while being dotted with bridges that date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Simply relax by the tranquil riverside or get active on the basketball courts, athletic fields, and in the swimming pool.

Just to the east of Rahway lies the Hawk Rise Sanctuary, a 95-acre ecological preserve and wetland along the Rahway River. The best way to explore is along one of the scenic boardwalks or walking trails that lead through the forest and its adjacent marshes, grasslands, and mudflats. The sanctuary is a popular birdwatching destination, with more than 160 bird species having been recorded here, including endangered black skimmers, northern harriers, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons.

Across the Rahway River from the Hawk Rise Sanctuary lies Joseph Medwick Park, which is ideal for RVers traveling with kids. Enjoy a hit on the tennis courts or ballfields, with a children’s playground and scenic picnic groves where you can relax over lunch. Or, drive west to the Milton Lake Park for a spot of fishing or to stretch your legs on the waterfront hiking trails.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Rahway and make the 30-minute drive northeast to Jersey City and the Liberty Harbor RV Park. There are 50 RV sites to choose from with views towards the skyline of New York City, together with Wi-Fi, an on-site laundry room, and a restaurant/bar.

Another nearby RV park is for military ID holders only and just over 30 minutes’ drive south in Colts Neck. The Navy Earle MWR RV Park has just 15 RV sites on its military base, so you’ll need to book ahead, with picnic tables, barbecue grills, and Wi-Fi also available.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Rahway and head to The Merchants & Drovers Tavern Museum, which preserves a historic tavern that dates to 1773. Join a guided tour to learn about the Victorian-era murder known as “The Unknown Woman” and the building’s transformation from an inn to a building for the Girl Scouts. The Merchants & Drovers Tavern is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and lies adjacent to the Rahway Cemetery, which offers a unique glimpse into the city’s past.

Rahway is just 15 minutes’ drive from the county seat of Elizabeth, which is home to the sprawling indoor outlet mall of the Mills at Jersey Gardens. Pick up discounted items from big-name brands, then grab a bite to eat.
