Sprawling to the south of the Passaic River, New Providence, New Jersey is an attractive residential borough on the outskirts of Newark. It was first settled by a European Puritan colony in 1720 and named Turkey Town after the presence of wild turkeys in the region. The New Providence Presbyterian Church was established in 1737, and after the collapse of the church balcony caused no serious injuries, the residents decided to change the town’s name to reflect what they saw as Divine intervention.

Wedged between the Watchung Reserve and the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, New Providence is the ideal destination to rent an RV for exploring New Jersey’s natural attractions. It’s within easy access to shopping malls and all the services you need while being on the doorstep of the “Big Apple.”

Discover New Providence

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in New Providence and head to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which is a birding hotspot and resting area for more than 200 migratory and resident species. The 7,800-acre refuge encompasses a sprawling swamp where birds come to refuel while traveling along the eastern coast of the United States. If you’re not into birdwatching, you might also be able to catch a glimpse of deer, foxes, muskrats, and raccoons that also inhabit the area.

Drive in the other direction from New Providence, and you’ll arrive at the Watchung Reservation, which takes its name from the word used by Lenape Native Americans to describe the area’s mountains. Follow one of the hiking or horseback riding trails that wind along the wooded slopes of the First Watchung and Second Watchung Mountains or explore the upper valley of Blue Brook. Fishing is also on offer at Lake Surprise while the Trailside Nature & Science Center offers an educational insight into the local ecology.

If you’re traveling with pets, grab a motorhome rental in New Providence and head to Echo Lake Park, a popular recreational area that’s home to a dog park. It centers around a sparkling lake where you can fish and boat in the summer months or go ice skating when it freezes over in the winter. There’s a picturesque lakeside walking trail where you can stretch your legs, as well as a children’s playground with monkey bars, slides, and a climbing wall.

RV Parks

Book a travel trailer rental in New Providence and pull into one of the RV sites at the Liberty Harbor RV Park. It lies at the gateway to New York City, with sweeping views across the city skyline. Aside from their 50 RV sites, the park has an on-site laundry facility and a restaurant, as well as Wi-Fi for guests.

Military ID holders can also book into the Navy Earle MWR RV Park, which features just 15 sites on an active military base. It offers RV sites with 20, 30 and 50-amp service, as well as Wi-Fi, picnic facilities, and barbecue grills.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near New Providence and explore the borough’s downtown area on foot. It’s here that you’ll find the Village Shopping Center, with a good selection of retail stores and eateries, as well as the New Providence Veterans Memorial Park. In the heart of town is the famous New Providence Presbyterian Church, the historic whitewashed landmark after which the borough is named.

New Providence is just 10 minutes’ drive from The Mall at Short Hills where you’ll find around 150 specialty stores and eateries. There are big-name designer brands as well as American department stores. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can refuel at one of the mall’s many eateries, including casual cafes, fast food joints, and fine-dining restaurants.

New Providence also makes a good base for visiting Newark and New York, both of which are under an hour’s drive or a short train ride from the borough. Spend a day browsing the international artworks on display at the Newark Museum and wandering through Riverfront Park or buy tickets to see a show at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Or, head into the “Big Apple” to tick landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building off your list or get your cultural fix at the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

New Providence is home to a couple of supermarkets where you can stock up on groceries, with a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries if you want to dine out. There are gas stations if you want to fill up your camper rental in New Providence or you can make the 10-minute drive south to Watchung.

Whether you’re visiting Union County for its recreational parks or shopping malls, book an RV in New Providence and start exploring.
