Although Mine Hill Township was incorporated as a township relatively recently, in 1923, there were settlers and miners residing in the area as far back as the early 1700s. As the name suggests, the area was known for mines. In fact, the hill upon which the town was built was one of the richest sources of iron ore in the entire country. The owner of the mine, Mahlon Dickerson, supplied most of the iron during the American Revolutionary War, and historians suspect that he sold to both sides. The last mine closed in the 1960s.
The town gained minor attention in the news for the murder of Roseann Quinn, a schoolteacher who was stabbed to death by a man she met at a bar. This murder spawned several urban lores and was the inspiration for a couple murder thriller novels. Today, the town is a bedroom community for New York City, which is about 40 miles to the east. The majestic Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is also around 40 miles to the west, making this town an ideal place to search for an RV rental.
New Jersey has hundreds of wilderness parks. Most are small. Some are large. A travel trailer rental from Mine Hill makes it easy to explore them all and find an adventure of a lifetime. Hopatcong State Park surrounds a nine-mile-long lake with a thin border of land. Though hiking opportunities are scarce, there’s plenty of waterfront activities to be had. Nearly all types of boats, ranging from motor boats to sailboats, are welcome. Two boat ramps are available to the public, and the private marinas at various points along the shore also have boats for rent. The public beach has a lifeguard on duty during the summer months, and swimming is welcome. Elsewhere, swim at your own risk. Anglers can catch a variety of fish including channel catfish, walleye, hybrid striped bass, and rainbow trout.
The impressively long Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area yawns hundreds of miles along the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border. The massive, ancient river divides the valley in half. Hundreds of waterfalls, fed by meandering babbling creeks, spill over cliffs. The Gap’s rocky cliffs, which were formed by when a small continent collided with ancient America, are a mix of conglomerate and quartzite banded by shale. This type of rock is extremely popular with climbers who enjoy the challenging surface. The lengths of routes vary depending on the exact spot. Most routes range from 150 feet to 300 feet, roughly between 10 and 21 stories. Boating, kayaking, tubing, and swimming are popular activities. In springs and early summers, the Class III and IV rapids are a fun challenge for the daredevils. Many campgrounds are RV friendly. Bring your Mine Hill travel trailer rental and set out on the perfect adventure.
When you book an RV rental in Mine Hill, be sure to consider where you’ll park overnight. Street parking is prohibited in many towns. There are a few private campgrounds nearby, though.
The FLA-Net Campground near Mount Olive has been run by the same family for three generations. The site is adjacent to a large pond, which is a nice plus on a hot, humid summer day. Swim, wade, or even fish for supper. This facility includes 30/50 amps, a swimming pool, and hot showers.
Panther Lake Camping Resort may also be a good candidate. The Andover campground is roomy and located next to a small 45-acre lake. In addition to full hookups, and a swimming pool, there’s also a convenience store where guests can grab a forgotten necessity.
Although taking a day trip into the Big Apple (also known as New York City) is a breeze when using NJ Transit, exploring the local attractions in a Mine Hill motorhome rental is equally convenient. Not to mention, NYC doesn't have its own Wild West neighborhood in the city. Just a few minutes away in Stanhope he Wild West City is a western theme park. Simulating 1880 Dodge City, KS, there are 22 different live-action shows, including the classic-yet-always-thrilling “High Noon” shootout with the local gunslinger baddie. Spectators can also embark on a stagecoach ride, go panning for gold, and visit the barnyard zoo.
Eager to try rock climbing, but not quite ready to set out on your own at the Gap? The Climbing Center in Randolph will get you started. When was the last time you had homemade ice cream? Cliff’s churns high-quality ice cream in a vintage 1970s shop, complete with the old-school walk-up display of giant cans of ice cream. The award-winning ice cream was even been featured on the Food Network. Cliff’s is in particular known for its towering, bulbous ice cream scoops piled upon sugar cones and its “Skyscraper," a soft-serve ice cream that very nearly tops 12 inches. Pull up in a Mine Hill rental RV, grab a cone, and join the line of people sitting on the curb and weather-worn picnic tables.
Homemade ice cream paired with an Mine Hill camper rental is the perfect way to wrap up a visit to central New Jersey.
