Several Native American tribes used the land that would later become known as Milltown. A short list includes Lenape, Quemareck, Quesiacs, Isarick, Metapis, Peckawan, and Turantaca. To this day, artifacts and signs of their settlements can be found at various points along the Lawrence Brook, which was known as “Piscopeek” by these tribes. In 1678, this land was acquired by a New York baker, Thomas Lawrence, who built a gristmill (flour mill) to produce the flour for his bakery, and eventually, other bakeries, too. A majority of the inhabitants in the settlement that sprang up around this mill were employed there, and thus, the town was dubbed Milltown.

Milltown gained some attention in the national news when its City Council voted against changing the name of Petain Avenue. This street was named after a distinguished French WWI General, Philippe Petain. He later led Vichy France government during WWII. This regime collaborated with Nazi Germany and sent thousands of people to their deaths. After the war, Petain was charged for a number of wartime crimes, and sentenced to death. France changed every single street and buildings named after Petain in the subsequent decades.

Milltown is also known for its role in The Great Train Robbery, a classic 1903 western film. A majority of it was filmed here.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to grab an RV rental is to find all of the pockets of wilderness that splatter across New Jersey. Most are small, but there are a few large ones with plenty of elbow room and pristine wilderness to roam. The Sourland Mountain Preserve is one of the largest in northern New Jersey, and it will tick off the boxes for most outdoorsmen and adventurers. Miles of multi-use trails, some tame and others challenging, wind through mature woods. Babbling creeks create an idyllic background noise as adventurers explore the woods. Spry rock climbers whip up vertical slabs and boulders with amazing speed, as quick as a skittish salamander. This park is one of the very few that allows RC aircraft, drones, and plane models to fly free (RC and drone flights are strictly regulated within 10-miles radius of New York City’s airports).

For true isolation, hikers and outdoorsmen will need to head either west, across the border into Pennsylvania, or south. Wharton State Forest, about 60 miles to the south near Hammonton, is the largest park in New Jersey. Surpassing 120,000 acres of land, it has several miles of multi-use trails, a handful of large, well-stocked fishing lakes, and hunting is allowed during designated seasons. Bring your Milltown camper rental here and have a great time! Wharton has plenty of parking, and trailer sites should you decide to overnight there.

If Wharton isn’t enough, the Batona Trail connects Wharton to Brendan T. Byrne and Bass River State Forests, covering a whopping 50 miles. There’s plenty of ground to cover in your Milltown travel trailer rental.

RV Parks

Due to covenants and policies in place, campgrounds and RV-friendly parking are few and far in between in this northern part of the state. When you book an RV in Milltown, be sure to find a place to overnight it. Most options are either across the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border or a few miles to the south. A possible candidate is the Pine Cone Resort in Freehold. Open year-round, which is unusual, it has a number of attractive features like hot showers, large swimming pool, and full hookups. WiFi and cable are included, which are always a plus.

Alternatively, Beaver Valley Family Campground in Ottsville, PA, may be a good option. Set in secluded woods, the family business offers several perks like WiFi, swimming pools, and wagon rides.

Exploring the City

Though a quiet sleepy suburban town, renting an RV in Milltown makes it easy to find your fun in the neighboring towns. Step back into time at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway, where reenactors dress in 18th-and 19th-century garb and recreate historical events that occurred in New Jersey. See what it was like to be in the midst of war. How to bake bread from scratch. How to make bullets and nails in a crude forge. 14 historic buildings in Old Town Village were relocated from elsewhere in New Jersey and restored to its original state. Spectators can not only witness history in the making but also interact with demonstrators to learn their thoughts and worries as their world virtually crumbles around them.

Love the idea of seeing a Broadway play, but dreading the idea of contending with the crowded New York traffic in an unfamiliar rental RV? Consider a local theater instead. Nationally acclaimed, the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick is a top-notch theater that produces Broadway and Off-Broadway plays.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing and touring this part of New Jersey, grab a cold drink, and kick up your heels in your luxury motorhome rental to unwind.

Should you be seeking a cool, in New Jersey you are seeking to explore, consider a travel trailer rental in Milltown. Relax by a campfire, hike along a trail, and take in the vast scenery. Rent a camper in Milltown, NJ, and go explore the state.
