Originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians, Magnolia, New Jersey has a rich history of colonial land grants and Quaker communities dating back to the 17th century. It was officially incorporated as a borough in 1915 (combining parts of Centre Township and Clementon) and named for the magnolia trees that were growing in the area.

Magnolia is a laid-back place to rent an RV while exploring Camden County and is on the doorstep of numerous family-friendly campgrounds. It’s within easy access of the bright lights of Philadelphia while being just a stone’s throw from plenty of recreational reserves to explore.

Discover Magnolia

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your camper rental in Magnolia and drive east to the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, which is traversed by around 25 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails (not to mention cross-country skiing trails during the winter months). You can follow the multi-use Mount Misery Trail or tackle part of the extensive Batona Trail, with the Cranberry Trail also wheelchair accessible. The Brendan T. Byrne State Forest also encompasses the Cedar Swamp Natural Area that’s home to threatened Helonias bullata (swamp pink), as well as the Whitesbog Village where one of the state’s largest cranberry and blueberry farms was founded in the 1870s.

Just to the south sprawls the immense Wharton State Forest, which encompasses 122,880 acres within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. It’s another destination where natural landscapes are combined with historic villages, in this case, the 18th-century bog iron and glass manufacturing site of Batsto Village. Explore one of the numerous hiking trails that wind through oak-pine forests and wetlands or get a different perspective while canoeing along the Mullica River.

If you’re a keen birdwatcher, make a beeline south to the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area, which encompasses 2,000 acres of low deciduous swamp and oak/pine forests. It’s frequented by both resident and migratory species, such as Kentucky warblers, Eastern bluebirds, and nesting woodpeckers. After exploring the walking trails lined with mountain laurel and wild azaleas, head east to the Winslow Fish and Wildlife Management Area, which centers around a turquoise-colored lake.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Magnolia and book a spot at the Oldman’s Creek Campground, which lies a short drive south in Monroeville. You can opt for one of their 20, 30, or 50-amp RV sites, then take advantage of the recreational facilities that include basketball courts and a children’s playground.

Also nearby is the Four Seasons Family Campground, a big rig-friendly RV destination that offers both open and wooded sites. Cool off in the newly opened swimming pool or get active on the sporting courts, with an on-site lake where you’re welcome to swim, fish, and canoe.

Head west from Magnolia, and you’ll arrive at the Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA, another family-friendly (and pet-friendly) campground. Select between their pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups, then enjoy access to the on-site swimming pool, children’s playground, and jumping pillow.

Exploring the City

Pick up your RV rental near Magnolia and stroll along the residential streets, visiting the Magnolia railway station and the Albertson Memorial Park. A short drive northwest will take you to the shores of Haddon Lake where you can go boating and fishing or just relax in the picnic area. You can follow the one-mile-long trail that rings the lake or let the kids run loose in one of the two playground areas.

If you’re interested in the local history, head to the Indian King Tavern in nearby Haddonfield, which was the first State Historic Site to be established in 1903. It was here that a meeting of the New Jersey General Assembly took place in 1777, officially ratifying the Declaration of Independence and adopting its Great Seal. Join a guided tour to explore the first and second floors of this landmark building, with the interior recreated to its period appearance.

Magnolia makes a great base for visiting Philadelphia, which is less than 30 minutes’ drive to the north. Have your photo taken in front of the Liberty Bell and see where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed at Independence Hall, then snap the famous LOVE sculpture in John F. Kennedy Plaza. Chow down on local delicacies at the Reading Terminal Market and get your cultural fix on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which is home to the Rodin Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Magnolia is home to a couple of supermarkets for stocking up on supplies, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants if you want to dine out. There’s also a gas station if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Magnolia.

Whether you’re visiting Camden County for its fishing lakes or Revolutionary War history, book an RV in Magnolia and start exploring.
