Named after William Livingston, the first Governor of New Jersey, Livingston is a small township that was officially incorporated in 1813. It was settled by a group of Newark residents who decided to move west in 1699, negotiating with the Lenni Lenape Native Americans for the purchase of land. Disputes over land ownership eventually led to the Horseneck Riots, which lasted for ten years from 1745.

Livingston flourished in the post-Revolutionary War years, then again in the 1920s when the invention of the automobile made it more accessible to reach Newark. Today, it’s a pleasant suburban community that’s within easy access to a range of outdoor pursuits, making it a great place to rent an RV while discovering Essex County.

The Great Outdoors

Book a camper rental in Livingston and make the short drive east to the South Mountain Reservation, a 2,110-acre nature reserve that lies along the Rahway River. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers at the end of the 19th century and features stunning woodlands and tall hemlocks that tower above meandering streams and waterfalls. Soak up the views across New York City and Jersey City from the Crater View or head to the Turtle Back Zoo to get up close to native wildlife species.

Another great place for capturing views of Manhattan is the Eagle Rock Reservation, which extends across more than 400 acres of forest and parklands in the First Watchung Mountain. It’s named after a bare rock that looks down from the mountain and is traversed by the 34-mile-long Lenape Trail, with deer and bears known to inhabit the reservation. Soak up the views towards the skyline of New York City and pay your respects at the marble memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks.

A short drive north of Livingston is the Troy Meadows Wetlands, which sprawls across 3,100 acres and is a remnant of the Glacial Lake Passaic. It’s the largest freshwater marsh in New Jersey and traversed by a two-mile-long boardwalk that allows visitors to explore this National Natural Landmark. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of butterflies, reptiles and amphibians, as well as migratory waterfowl that stop to refuel here along the Atlantic flyway.

RV Parks

Pick up your motorhome rental in Livingston and drive east to the Liberty Harbor RV Park, which is situated in Jersey City. Its claim to fame is being the closest RV campground to New York City, with views towards Manhattan from the 50 RV sites. You can take advantage of the complimentary Wi-Fi and on-site laundry or enjoy a night off from cooking at the park’s restaurant.

Alternatively, make the short drive north to the Mahlon Dickerson Campgrounds, which are situated within the Morris County Park Commission. All of the RV sites are paved and in a wooded setting, with wildlife viewing, fishing, and hiking trails right on your doorstep.

If you’re after a Walmart, head to nearby Cedar Knolls where you may be able to set up camp for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

The "Big Apple" is home to iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Central Park, as well as a legendary theater scene along Broadway. If it’s your second visit to New York City, take time to explore beyond the island of Manhattan in the energized streets of Brooklyn or Queens.
