A former Lenape hunting grounds, the area saw its first European settler in late 16th century. Henry Greenland purchased a large tract of land and built an inn/tavern near the intersection of the Raritan River and the Assunpink Trail. The trail was heavily used by the Lenape Native Americans and later co-opted by European settlers. Present-day Lincoln Highway was built over this trail.

Although the construction of the Delaware & Raritan Canal in 1836 brought in an influx of settlers and mine and lumber workers, Highland Park’s main industry remained agricultural for many years. As a result, the town grew very slowly compared with other towns near the canal. Today, Highland Park is primarily a bedroom community that’s best known for a particular neighborhood: the Livingston Manor Historic District. This neighborhood is one of the earliest planned developments in New Jersey, created in the early 20th century. This one stands out, in particular, because many of the homes were designed by artisans and craftsmen. Though homes on each individual blocks have a similar footprint, the craft details are unique to each home.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to book an RV in Highland Park is to explore the outdoors and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Though this part of New Jersey is crowded with suburban homes, there are wilderness parks of varying sizes. The Sourland Mountain Preserve is one of the largest in the immediate area. Once inside its boundaries, it’s easy to forget that you’re so close to a major city. The sounds of city life are reduced to a faint whisper, easily drowned out by birdsong and gentle breezes wafting through mature oaks and maples. Miles of multi-use trails range from idyllic, ideal for young children, to challenging that’ll delight any athletic adventurer. Mountain biking and horseback riding are allowed on some trails. Bouldering, which is a less daunting, but no less challenging version of rock-climbing, is a popular activity. Climbers can be spotted crawling over giant boulders that are littered across this park.

For pure wilderness and solitude, adventurers will need to hop into their camper rental and either venture some 60 miles to the south to Wharton State Forest or head out of state. Both New York and Pennsylvania have larger state parks and forests. Wharton State Forest, which is a shorter drive, might tick off most boxes. Encompassing over 122,000 acres of land, there are over 100 miles of multi-use, unpaved trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders to enjoy. The dense woods and meadows virtually teem with wildlife, ranging from the sage great-horned owls to shy black bears. Bring your Highland Park travel trailer rental! Some campgrounds have hookups for RVs, and for the “glampers,” other sites allow RVs and trailers but lack the hookups.

RV Parks

When you search for the perfect RV rental, be sure to figure out where you’ll park it overnight or while you explore the area. This close to New York City, there are several rules and covenants prohibiting RV campgrounds or parking. There are a handful of options out of town, however.

The Pine Cone Resort in Freehold may be a good option. Open year-round, which is unusual (most NJ campgrounds close during the winter months), it includes several amenities, like a large swimming pool, free cable, and WiFi, which is a nice plus on rainy days, and an on-site convenience store.

Another option is Indian Rock RV Park & Campground on the outskirts of Jackson. Conveniently close to the Six Flags Great Adventure Park, this campground is set in the quiet woods. Each site has 30/50 amp electric and water, and because not all sites have sewer access, there is a dump station if needed. Because of its proximity to the amusement park, space can book fast, particularly over the weekends. Reserve well in advance.

Exploring the City

Whether you seek history, culture, art, or adventure, there’s something for everyone in this part of New Jersey. Book an RV in Highland Park to find the perfect activity. An RV rental makes touring the Livingston Manor Historic District a snap. Nearly the entire region is on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of these homes are on the north side of the Raritan Ave (Route 27), intersecting the North 2nd Avenue.

Love the idea of seeing theater plays, but wary of dealing with the infamous New York traffic in a rental RV? Fear not! Just across the river, from New York is New Brunswick which offers comedy clubs, nightclubs, world-class art museums, and fantastic theaters. George Street Playhouse, a nationally acclaimed theater, regularly puts on Broadway and off-Broadway productions in a state-of-art auditorium. Stress Factory Comedy Club headlines both well-known comics and up-and-coming entertainers. The comics and entertainers often prefer smaller venues when honing their acts, and this club is a regular stop on their tours. Past comics include notable names like Shawn Wayans (of the Wayans brothers), Michael Rapaport, and SNL’s Tim Meadow.

Golfing and New Jersey go hand in hand. There are several public golf courses and a few private ones that are open to the public in the area. The Quail Brook Golf Course in Somerset is an 18-hole course that regularly hosts pro championship tournaments. The fairways are on gently rolling swells, lined by lush green maples. A babbling brook sets an ambient background sound. The driving range has five targets for golfers, and there is a practice bunker nearby as well.

New Yorkers are famous for their love of a good cup of coffee. That passion has spread to northern New Jersey. End a long day of sightseeing and adventure in your luxury RV rental by stopping at one of the local roasters for a lovely, rich cup of coffee. The Penstock Coffee Roasters roasts all their coffees in-house, and sources as many beans as they can direct from farmers. The remainder is purchased only if they’re certified fair trade and sustainable. This roastery has won awards from the prestigious Good Foods Foundation.
