One of the smallest towns in New Jersey, Helmetta measures an astounding 0.9 square mile. The sole police officer locks up the Police Department office building a few times a day to go on his beat, which usually takes him less than an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. It’s not quite a sleepy town, though. The Conrail freight train, which passes by the outskirts several times a day, rattles anyone in danger of nodding off awake.

A tobacco company was founded here in 1825 and later sold to George W. Helme in 1870. He built the fledgling business into a major enterprise, and a town quickly sprang up around it. It was named Helmetta in honor of Mr. Helme’s daughter, who was known as Etta.

The town of Edison is less than 30 minutes north. Sayreville is around 20 minutes northeast. Both of these would make great day trips.

The Great Outdoors

An upside went you rent an RV in Helmetta is the almost-immediate access to the outdoors. Jamesburg Park, which curls around the north side of the town, is a little over 1,400 acres. It was created to protect the unique Pine Barrens, a particular habitat in New Jersey that shelters a diverse range of wildlife and rare plants like orchids and carnivorous pitcher plants.

Assunpink Wildlife Management Park designated an “Important Bird Area,” is home to several species of birds, including rare and threatened birds like Vesper Sparrow and Long-Eared Owl. This park contains a mix of scrub, upland forests, wetlands, and small lakes. There are several miles of hiking and biking trails, many of which are not maintained. Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular activities as well. There are many small pockets of wilderness in New Jersey. To get a taste of what wilderness was like 100 years or more ago, book a rental RV and head south to Wharton State Forest.

Wharton State Forest is a massive (for New Jersey), sprawling 123,000-acre park. An extensive network of multi-use trails winds through mature woods, bogs, and meadows. Batona Trail, which is the longest in the park, also extends to the other nearby parks, Brendan T. Byrne and Bass River State Forests. In addition to horseback riding, biking, and hiking, cross-country skiing in the wintertime is also a popular activity. Wharton’s parking lots at several trailheads are roomy enough to accommodate your Helmetta motorhome rental, and there are also a couple of RV-friendly campgrounds.

RV Parks

This close to New York, it can be difficult to find someplace to park your Helmetta RV rental overnight. For more flexibility, head south toward midstate. Pinecone RV Resort in Freehold, boasts spacious lots, full hookups, and free WiFi. It’s also open year-round, which is unusual in New Jersey.

Alternatively, Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson may fit the bill. An Olympic-sized swimming pool, fishing, and a playground will keep families busy, and Six Flags Great Adventure is conveniently close by. Due to its proximity to the amusement park, space can go quickly, particularly over weekends. Book in advance so that you are able to nab that perfect spot.

Exploring the City

The cities central position makes it a terrific place to explore New Jersey in your luxury motorhome rental from Helmetta. A mere few miles to the east, sandy brown beaches, and dark, wild seas stretch along the coast. Play beach volleyball, search for seashells and horseshoe crabs and cool off in the chilly Atlantic ocean. The bold and brave swimmers can try windsurfing, body-surfing, or surfing on the wild waves.

Avoid the tourists in New York by hopping into your Helmetta camper rental and heading over to Trenton’s New Jersey State Museum, which is a planetarium, art, and history museum all wrapped up into one. The collections also include New Jersey archaeology exhibition featuring artifacts dating back 2,000 years, well before Europeans ever arrived on these shores and dinosaur fossils found in New Jersey that are millions of years old. The planetarium puts on a dazzling show while the soniferous narrator details what the astrophysicists and scientists know about space, the origins of galaxies and faraway stars. The planetarium shows are scheduled for weekends only.

Hit the links! Tamarack Golf Course in East Brunswick, which has two 18-hole championship golf courses, was designed by renowned course architect Hal Purdy. The courses were rated the second-most-difficult in central New Jersey by the New Jersey Golf Association, and paradoxically, players consistently rate the courses as “fun.” The on-site driving range features five target greens.

Though the soil in this part of New Jersey is acidic and sandy, grapes seem to love it. Indeed, there are a handful of vineyards in the area. The Working Dog Winery produces a range of award-winning red, white, and sweet wines. The limited batches of wines sell out almost faster than they can bottle them. The winery keeps some bottles in reserve, though, for their tasting room and store, which are open Friday through Sunday. Wrap up a long day of sightseeing in your Helmetta motorhome rental with a chilled glass of wine while enjoying the countryside views.
