Pick up your travel trailer rental in Garwood and head west to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which provides an important feeding and resting area for a variety of migratory and permanent bird species. It encompasses almost 7,800 acres of varied habitats, including a vast swamp where birds come to refuel while migrating along the eastern United States. In addition to being a popular destination for twitchers, the refuge is also attractive for wildlife lovers as a home to deer, fox, raccoons, and muskrats.

Also nearby is the Watchung Reservation, which sprawls across 1,945 acres between the ridges of First Watchung Mountain and Second Watchung Mountain. “Watchung” is derived from the word used by the Lenape Native Americans to describe the area’s mountains, with numerous hiking and horseback riding trails allowing you to explore their slopes. Visit the Trailside Nature & Science Center on the southern edge of the park or try your luck at fishing on the shores of Lake Surprise.
