Although Denville was officially founded in 1913, its history began a long time ago. Immigrants filtered to the Denville area as early as 1690. These settlers were a mix of Quakers, Dutch, English, and Germans. William Penn, who is credited for creating the state of Pennsylvania, surveyed the area in 1715; however, it’s unknown whether he purchased any properties at the time. The oral history that was written down in the early 1800s suggests the name, Denville, is because hunters found a “den” of wild animals in a swampy area that later would become the site of the town.

Although a quiet town for much of its history, the city had its 15-minutes of fame. A television show, The Sopranos, filmed a few episodes that were based in Denville. Sharp-eyed viewers can spot a few buildings used in these episodes that are still standing today. Denville’s central location between the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and New York City makes it an ideal place in which to explore in an RV rental.

Discover Denville

The Great Outdoors

New Jersey is notorious for its hot, humid summer days and mosquitoes that seem to swarm year-round. Escape the sticky air and biting flies in a Denville RV trailer rental. An RV rental makes it easy to enjoy all the wilderness parks in the area. The Norvin Green State Forest is a modest 5,500-acre park near Bloomingdale. The 20-odd miles of hiking trails are challenging, with hilly, rocky terrains. Cresting the summit of the Norvin Green rewards hikers with a sweeping vista of the New York City skyline and the valley to the west.

Escape the crowds by heading to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (affectionately known as the Gap). Although a few areas can get congested during the high season, once hikers get a few miles underway, solitude and quiet are possible. There are over 100 miles of hiking trails, not including the Appalachian Trail, which cuts through the Gap. Small waterfalls form in springtime after snowmelt and disappear as the summer heat sets in. A few waterfalls, fed by larger streams, continue to flow year-round in all but the driest of years. Raymondskill Falls is a dazzling three-tiered fall that is the tallest in Pennsylvania. The river itself, save for a few weeks in late spring, is calm and serene, popular with boaters, kayakers, and swimmers. Bring your RV rental as there are campgrounds that dot the interior, many of which offer hookups for your RV.

RV Parks

When you book an RV rental in Denville, NJ, you'll need to potentially figure out where you’ll park overnight. Many neighborhoods, Denville included, prohibit overnight parking. Sun-Air Lakeside Camp in Oak Ridge, NJ, is adjacent to a small lake with a sandy man-made beach. Hot water, RV hookups, and a playground area are included. It’s also pet-friendly, which is a nice plus.

The Great Divide Campground features a large private lake, an Olympic-sized pool, and a security gate feature. Based out of Newton, it’s close to several wilderness parks.

Exploring the CIty

It’s hard to escape history in New Jersey. A luxury RV rental makes it easy to drive around the country in style and explore all the little out-of-way restaurants and boutique shops, as well as ogle the historic, stately homes, many of which date back to the founding of this country. Original covered bridges and pony-truss bridges dot the lush landscape. In western New Jersey, there are farms that are still owned by the same original families, handed down for generations. Step back into time at Waterloo Village, a historic 19th-century reenactment village in Stanhope, with original (and restored) buildings and homes. The museum on site has thousands of artifacts and original tools and devices that were used by colonists as they struggled to tame the wild new country.

It’s well worth the time to visit the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg. Highlighting New Jersey’s history with mining, visitors are guided through the exhibit hall that has hundreds of unusual fossils, minerals, and gems on display. They’re then led into the deep, dark mine to arrive at the rainbow tunnel. Under UV light, the rocks fluorescent in a dazzling array of rainbow hues. Some of these minerals and rocks are unique to New Jersey, found nowhere else in the world.

Though Pennsylvania is well known for its love of craft beer, New Jersey shouldn’t be excluded. There are several craft beer companies in the area. Fort Nonsense Brewing Company is a family endeavor combining chemistry backgrounds with a love for specialty beer. FNBC brews a variety of beer ranging from the classic lagers to “nonsensical beer” for the adventurous souls.

One does not need to venture far to find an adventure of a lifetime in a Denville, NJ, camper rental.
