The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive to the north of town is the Worthington State Forest. Worthington is home to a section of the Kittatinny Mountains, thus making the terrain of the park relatively varied and rugged. Experienced hikers are sure to enjoy the challenges of climbing Mt. Tammany while the more novice hikers, or those who don’t want to be more than 1,500 feet in the air, can enjoy the trails around Sunfish Pond or even head out on the seven-mile section of the Appalachian Trail that cuts through the park. If hiking really isn’t your speed, then you can explore the five miles of canoeing trails that wind through the park.

Just a quick drive east of town is the Jenny Jump State Forest in Hope. Home to the Jenny Jump Mountain Range, this is another great place to explore if you’re looking for a little bit more challenging hiking options. With 11 miles of trails winding through the park, you’ll be able to explore this ancient glacial landscape and imagine what the land may have looked like thousands of years ago. Or instead, you can simply enjoy the panoramic vistas as you reach each summit.

Over the border into neighboring Pennsylvania is the Long Pond Conservation Easement near Tannersville. This relatively secretive park allows visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of eastern Pennsylvania. Visitors can hike through the forest on the maintained trails, enjoy a picnic, or even head out to one of the maintained sports fields and play a pick-up game. Also, if you fancy yourself an outdoor enthusiast, you can get yourself the necessary paperwork and permits and take to the park’s hunting range and try your luck.
