Once inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans for thousands of years, the tribes left the area when European settlers migrated into the area. They were attracted to the region that would become Chatham because crossing the Passaic River at this juncture was easier, and it was also close to a pass in the mountains. The nearby Native American trail was co-opted by the local farmers and miners for the transport of their goods. Initially named John Day’s Bridge, the community changed the town’s name to Chatham in 1773 in a nod to a British Parliament member, the first Earl of Chatham (the British counterpart), who was an advocate of establishing rights for the American colonists.

Most of the homes in Chatham were built in the 19th century. However, two 18th-century homes are still standing: the Paul Day house and Nathaniel Bonnell House. Today, Chatham is known for its annual “Fishawack” Festival, which draws tens of thousands of people. Due to its wonderful proximity to New York City and dozens of wilderness parks, book an RV rental in Chatham, NJ, and set off on an amazing outdoor adventure of making new memories with the family.

Discover Chatham

The Great Outdoors

New Jersey is well aware that because of the suburban sprawl, retaining space for wild animals is increasingly a vital commodity. Several wilderness parks are protected, partly to preserve them for the future, and partly to protect some of the rare, threatened, and endangered animals. A Chatham RV rental allows nature lovers and outdoors folks to explore these parks and possibly spot one with their own eyes, which would be quite a feat. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is home to several species of endangered animals, including the blue-spotted salamander, the Indiana bat, and wood turtle. This park is also a vital stopover spot for many birds and waterfowl. There are a few miles of established hiking trails, and going off-trail is a-okay, though hip waders are recommended.

For a larger park with more elbow room, hop into a Chatham travel trailer rental and head over to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The massive park sprawls over nearly 100,000 acres of land along the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border. There are hundreds of miles of multi-use trails that have endless opportunities for an adventure of a lifetime. Some trails take hikers up to sweeping, grand vistas of the river far below. And others, into fresh, bright meadows where deer frolic and rabbits bound. Aspiring spidermen scale sheer rock slabs, as agile as sticky-toed salamanders. Motorboats and sailboats drift by on the calmer sections of the river. Daredevil rafters and kayakers shoot the rapids, occasionally disappearing beneath the surface in heart-gripping moments. Several campgrounds and campsites in the park are RV friendly and can accommodate most any RV size.

RV Parks

In the quiet suburbia, overnight street parking is prohibited. There are a handful of private RV parks and campgrounds in the area, however. FLA-Net near Netcong is a family-owned business. Since the 1950s, they’ve offered the RV community a respite from a life on the road. The park offers several amenities like a swimming pool, 30 and 50 amps hookups, and hot showers.

The Great Divide in Newton, may be a candidate as well. Set in picturesque woods, the park includes some luxury amenities like an Olympic-sized pool, hot showers, and a security gate.

Walmart is known for its amicable relationship with folks that have an RV. In a pinch, some Walmart stores will allow you to “camp” in their parking lots overnight. The closest Walmart store is in Union, about nine miles south of the city. Ask the store manager for permission before setting up shop, though.

Exploring the City

The NJ Transit makes it easy to get into the Big Apple for sightseeing and fun. A luxury RV rental makes exploring the local towns equally effortless. And why not? There’s plenty of things to do in New Jersey. Step back into time at the Washington HQ Museum at the Morris National Historical Park. General Washington and his men encamped in Morristown, and the Georgian-style home was used as an HQ for their plotting and scheming. The restored home-now-museum is open to the public and has many original artifacts, historical items, documents, and furniture on display.

Big-name actors, comics, and other performers often prefer to perform at smaller venues while they’re working on honing their acts. The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn is known for headlining these entertainers. The Paper Mill also puts on American plays and musicals using local talents and has been awarded the Regional Theatre Tony Award for its efforts. This venue also occasionally hosts Broadway musicals and plays.

Golf courses designed by world-class architects dot the rolling New Jersey hills, strategically placed in between groves of trees and babbling streams. The Galloping Hill Golf Course was designed by Rees Jones, who is known for creating courses that are interesting to experienced golfers without frustrating the beginners. Although the par-71 course has a reputation for being challenging, it’s also consistently rated as “fun.” The facility also has heated practice stalls and putting greens for practice.

Make new memories that last a lifetime when you and the family come explore the are in your Chatham RV rental.
