Over 300 years ago, a Lenape Native American tribe resided in what would later become Allamuchy Township, and this Indian village was called “Allamuchahokkingen.” Shortened to “Allamucha” or “Allamuchy” by the French traders, there are mentions of this village on early surveys in 1715. It’s unknown when exactly settlers moved into the area, but by early 1800s, there were a grist (flour) mill and a sawmill, a grain distillery, and a tavern. Once the tavern was established, a residential town slowly grew around it.

Allamuchy Township was one of the stops (also referred to as a “way station”) on the Underground Railroad in the mid-1900s, transporting escaped slaves to Canada. Today, the township is best known for Rutherfurd Hall, a grand 18,000 square feet Tudor-style summer home. The hall was designed by Whitney Warren, who went on to design the Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Dense forests and small farms surrounds the town itself. The town administrators have enacted strict guidelines to regulate growth and to preserve the charm. As a result, most of the downtown area has a turn-of-the-century flair.

The closest large town is Hackettstown, five miles to the south.

The Great Outdoors

A common reason to rent an RV in Allamuchy Township is to explore the wild, wet outdoors from the comfort of your temporary home. It also gives you a greater flexibility in exploring all the little pockets of wilderness that pepper this part of New Jersey. Allamuchy Mountain and Stephens State Parks encompasses nearly 10,000 acres. 36 miles of old roads and trails wind through the region, passing by ruins of old farmhouses, geological curiosities from long-gone glaciers, and many streams and creeks. Note: be sure to obtain a map; it’s easy to get lost because several trails join for a stretch before parting ways again, and hikers can get confused. Allamuchy North, a particular trail, was designed by Jersey Off-Road Bike Association. Ideal for more experienced riders, there are several challenging portions where one must roll over large rocks, and ascend steep, technical hills.

Jenny Jump State Park, which is conveniently close by in Hope, is a popular destination for both locals and out of town visitors. It’s unknown how exactly the name came about. However, the local story says: the Lenni Lenape Native Americans cornered a young girl named Jenny at top of a cliff. Her father, fearing, for Jenny’s purity, shouted, "Jump, Jenny, jump!" Indeed, there are many cliffs and high points in this park, which were created by a glacier that gouged the land tens of thousands of years ago as it receded to the north. In the process, it also deposited huge boulders and piles of sediment. Rockhounds and hikers who enjoy technical trails will relish this park. Agility and fitness are required to be able to make it to the highest point in this park. Rent a camper in Allamuchy Township and see if you have what it takes. Jenny Jump is also one of the few remaining Dark-Skies Parks on the eastern seaboard. Astrophotographers will delight the ability to photograph the milky way in all its glory.

RV Parks

Don’t neglect to find someplace to park your Allamuchy Township motorhome overnight. Jenny Jump has a few small campsites that can accommodate a RV or a camper. However, there are no hookups. Space is limited, too, particularly in the summer months. Reserve ahead of time.

For more amenities and hookups, look into a private campground. There are a few in the area. Fla-Net Park, on the outskirts of Netcong, may be a candidate. It offers 15, 30, and 50 amps, WiFi, pull-thru sites, a swimming pool, and a rec room. Note: because this facility is on septic, the use of a personal washing machine is prohibited.

Exploring the City

Get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and explore the small towns in your Allamuchy Township motorhome rental. Tranquility Farm, which is one of the oldest farms in the area, dating back to early 1800s, sells fresh produce seasonally, fresh baked goods, homemade ice cream, and hormone- and antibiotic-free beef and pork. Free-range beef are drastically different from the kind purchased in a grocery store. The farm store also stocks homemade honey, jams, and jellies.

Step into the past at Waterloo Village in Stanhope. A historic site on the banks of Morris Canal, several homes and structures have been restored to their original condition. The Village features a working grist mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The historical society guides dress the part in authentic clothes and will converse with guests using the vernacular of the time.

Speed ahead a hundred years at Rutherfurd Hall, which was built in 1902. The museum and education center focuses on the history between 1900 and 1930, some of which features notable socialites and politicians like Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. The grounds are open to the public daily, and the Hall itself is open to the public on Wednesdays. There is ample parking for your rental RV.

Book an RV in Allamuchy Township, and set out to explore the area and enjoy the rugged, wild hills and lush greenery.
