McCook is a fascinating small town in the little-visited southwestern corner of Nebraska. It’s about an hour's drive from the nearest mid-size town, North Platte, and Interstate 80. It's also less than three hours' drive from the historically rich city of Grand Island. The town was founded in the late 1800s when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad built an extension to it; it was named after Union general Alexander McCook.

Book an RV in McCook, and you can see Nebraska’s Rainwater Basin region, a vast stretch of highly productive farmland punctuated by oak woodlands around its beautiful lakes. Its lack of tourists and tourist facilities give it a special kind of charm and provides travelers with the chance to see America’s heartland in its most natural form. A number of historical sites dot its main thoroughfares, and there are some fantastic lakes to explore just outside of town. You’ll never be bored when you choose an RV rental in McCook, Nebraska.

The Great Outdoors

When it comes to finding great outdoor recreation near McCook, it is all about the lakes, and Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area is one of the best examples of them. Only a half an hour's drive north of McCook, Hugh Butler Lake provides great opportunities for fishing, swimming, waterfowl hunting, and is a wonderful place for a family picnic. A few nature trails are located on its southern shore, and there’s even a small campground there if you’re looking for a place to park your travel trailer rental from McCook, NE.

A solid day trip option is Swanson Reservoir State Recreation Area. Speedboats and jet skis make this lake their playground, but you might also choose to rent a kayak in McCook if you want to get a little exercise out on the water. Like Red Willow, there are a few trails to hike along the shoreline, but the park is quite small, so they won’t take very long to complete.

If you’re looking to hit the links during your RV rental vacation, McCook has an excellent municipal course on the west end of town. The back nine is particularly challenging, so bring your "A" game.

RV Parks

One of the more convenient places to camp with your RV rental near McCook is Karrer Park on the eastern edge of town. The city park has a small campground with sites that include electrical hookups, along with access to showers and restroom. You can’t beat the location even if it isn’t big on amenities.

If you’d prefer to spend more time in nature with your McCook camper rental, check out Willow View Campground near the shores of Red Willow Reservoir. Their sites have electrical hookups, and there are also picnic tables, grills, showers, a playground for the kids, and a boat ramp. There’s no dump station, but there are a few gas stations in town.

There are also Spring Canyon Campground and Macklin Bay Campground, both on Swanson Lake to the west of McCook and near the town of Trenton. Sites are pretty rustic, but they do have dump stations and restrooms available and the lakefront sites have excellent views. McCook also has a Walmart Supercenter, and with the manager’s permission, you might be able to camp there with your RV rental. Don’t expect any amenities here and come with a full water tank.

Exploring the City

For a town with such a small population, McCook has quite a bit going on. B Street and Norris Avenue have an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops that are sure to please anyone who gets a campervan rental in McCook. There’s also a Carnegie Library attached to the main building and an extensive model train set up in the basement.
