In the midst of national forest land and the majestic Rocky Mountains, the lofty town of Libby, Montana has peacefully existed for over 200 years, starting as a series of trading posts, forts, and mining camps in the early 19th century. Before that, the Kootenai native people frequently hunted in and traveled through the land next to the Kootenay River that Libby now sits on.

This lovely mountain town is nestled in a river valley and is known as the seat for all of Lincoln County. Unfortunately, one of the small town’s claims to fame was a massive environmental disaster that saw the town become blanketed with asbestos due to contaminants produced by a local mine. The good news is that this once endangered town has been fully sanitized and rid of asbestos dust, restoring it to its former glory.

When you book an RV in Libby, the town is merely a small part of the bigger picture. This excellent jumping off point will allow you to cruise through the Rockies in search of panoramic views, national parks, waterfalls, and mountain hiking trails in one of the country’s most naturally beautiful states. If you have plans to explore more than just the immediate area, Kalispell, Missoula, and even Spokane, Washington are all within a few hours’ drive.

The Great Outdoors

Few places are more dazzlingly remote and full of such epic landscapes than Libby, so it is a natural fit for those hoping to explore some nature when they rent an RV. The great news is that you won’t have to look very far because the town is entirely surrounded by parks and forests. The Kootenai National Forest is one of the many places to explore near the town, with over two million acres of pristine land. Although a small sliver of Kootenai National Forest is found in neighboring Idaho, most of the forest is situated in western Montana. There are several wilderness areas, five different mountain ranges, campgrounds where you can stay with your Libby camper rental, and a large portion of the 1,200-mile Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.

Over the border in Idaho, you can venture off to Lake Pend Oreille and camp on its breathtaking shores with your Libby RV rental by owner. Sam Owen Campground & State Park is one of the many places you’ll find on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille that offers up a thrilling assortment of recreation activities for guests to take part in. Hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing are all commonly enjoyed at the state park.

Lone Pine State Park is located close to Kalispell, a fitting day-use area to visit if you have plans to explore the city too. There are several miles of nature trails you can hike, mountain bike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, or go horseback riding on, and a cheery visitor center that helps people understand the forest land and climate of the park.

No visit to northwest Montana would be complete without stopping at Glacier National Park, the crown jewel of The Treasure State’s parks. This million-acre masterpiece is dotted with serene lakes, enchanting forests, towering peaks belonging to the Rocky Mountains, and gigantic glaciers. Glacier National Park brings in three million people per year despite its remote location, due in large part to its unparalleled natural beauty. Not only is it a magical place during the day, but nighttime brings with it mesmerizing skies full of stars unencumbered by the light pollution that plagues other places. You can camp in one of this park’s many camping areas with the travel trailer rental from Libby.
