Nestled in Minnesota’s St. Croix River Valley, Rush City is a small town to the north of Minneapolis-St Paul. It was originally home to the Sioux, and later the Chippewa people before a road connecting the Mississippi River to Lake Superior opened the region up to settlement and development.
Surrounded by rolling hills, recreational reserves, and fish-filled lakes and rivers, Rush City is a popular place to rent an RV while exploring east Minnesota. It’s well-served by waterfront RV campgrounds while maintaining a laid-back and rural feel.
Pick up your camper rental in Rush City and make the short drive east to the Saint Croix Seeps State Natural Area, which extends along the Saint Croix River as it marks the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. It’s one of the most diverse areas along the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway for rare plant species and supports a rich habitat of black ash seepage swamp with yellow birch and red maple. RVers with an interest in botany can keep an eye out for American golden saxifrage and Pennsylvania sedge, as well as rare dragonfly species that can be seen flitting between the plants.
Continue driving east, and you’ll arrive at the Fish Lake Wildlife Area, a 14,000-acre wildlife refuge in neighboring Wisconsin. It’s a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and bird watching, with a vast northern sedge meadow surrounding the lake. It supports a diverse bird life, including numerous rare and uncommon species, as well as a variety of sedge, sphagnum moss, and willows.
A 30-minute drive north of Rush City will take you to the Chengwatana State Forest, which borders the Wild River State Park to the south and the Saint Croix State Park to the north. It was heavily logged for eastern white pine during the 19th century, with both the Kettle River and Snake River historically important for floating timber to the sawmills downstream. Today, the Chengwatana State Forest is a hub for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, as well as boating, canoeing, and fishing along the rivers.
Book a motorhome rental in Rush City and make the short drive west to the South Bay RV Park, which has around 40 paved RV sites on the shores of Rush Lake. There are picnic tables, fire pits, and a children’s playground, as well as a fish-cleaning station for anglers to utilize.
Another nearby option is the Rush Lake Resort & Campgrounds, a waterfront RV destination with electrical and water connections. There’s a children’s playground and also a camp store that sells groceries and camping supplies, as well as a boat ramp, docks, and slips for guests to take advantage of.
Or, book a spot at one of the RV sites at the Flickabirds Resort where you’ll find 50 RV sites with full hookups. It features its own restaurant for when you don’t feel like cooking, as well as a fish cleaning shack if you happen to catch your own dinner.
You can also make the 15-minute drive north to Pine City where you’ll find a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
Park your RV rental near Rush City and head to the North Chisago Historical Society Museum, which details the people and events that have shaped the town. It occupies a former dental clinic owned by Dr. Guptill who donated it to the society to share the cultural heritage of the region. Wander through the period-furnished rooms and admire the old military uniforms on display, together with old photographs and several pieces of locally-made art.
Anglers shouldn’t miss a visit to the “World's Largest Walleye” billboard, which is situated on the western outskirts of Rush City. It celebrates the 1,999-pound walleye that was caught by Paul Bunyan in Rush Lake, with the stats for his bait, line, rod, and reel also detailed. A replica sculpture of the massive fish sits alongside, making for the perfect photo opportunity.
Rush City makes a good base for exploring the sights and attractions of Minneapolis and its twin city, St. Paul, which are just under an hour’s drive to the south. Get your cultural fix while exploring the contemporary art exhibitions of the Walker Art Center or head to the adjacent Minneapolis Sculpture Garden where Claes Oldenburg's famous Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture is located. Minneapolis is also home to the immense Mall of America (one of the largest in the United States), which includes the family-friendly amusement park of Nickelodeon Universe.
Rush City is home to a supermarket where you can stock up on groceries, as well as a couple of eateries for dining out. There is also a gas station if you want to fill up your campervan in Rush City.
Whether you’re visiting Chisago County for its legendary fishing or proximity to Minneapolis-St Paul, book an RV in Rush City and start planning your adventure.
