Discover Red Wing

The Great Outdoors

Red Wing is lucky enough to be sitting in the midst of some of the best hiking trails in the Midwest: for many, there are too many to choose from. One of the most popular is Barn Bluff, and for this you, won’t even have to take your RV rental from Red Wing out of town. The hike is easily accessible and will reward you with beautiful views of Red Wing below you, as well as the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin. There are various ways to reach the summit, some of which are steeper and shorter, and others which meander through dense foliage, so you can pick the one that suits you.

Another nearby hiking trail is Cannon Valley Trail, which was a former Chicago Great Western Railroad line which connects Cannon Falls, Welch and Red Wing. The entire trail is paved and covers nearly 20 miles, paralleling the Cannon River, and offering glimpses of the valley and the extensive wetland complexes. Park up your camper rental from Red Wing and enjoy the views.

Frontenac State Park is full of hiking trails, many of which end in beautiful vistas or the shores of the Mississippi River. The area covers around 2300 acres on the bluffs overlooking Lake Pepin and is largely known for its bird watching opportunities. If bird watching is not your thing, picnicking, cross-country skiing, shoe shoeing, snowmobiling, and hiking are all very popular activities, with canoes and kayaks available to rent.

RV Parks

Located on State Highway 35, Lake Pepin Campground is a good place to base yourself to explore Southern Minnesota and the Mississippi Valley, just a stone’s throw away from the beautiful lake itself. The resort has many amenities such as clean restrooms and showers, sewer, water and electric, laundry facilities, picnic areas, a dump station, and various others, therefore is a good place to park your Red Wing motorhome rental overnight.

Another option is Refuge RV Park, which is just across the street from a large 18-hole golf course. The full hookup sites offer 50 amp service, with laundry facilities, and free cable TV. The area is very peaceful and quiet, and you will feel like you are a world away from busy city life.

If you really want to stay in the heart of the great outdoors, then Frontenac State Park offers camping facilities, with 58 drive-in campsites, 19 of which are electric. Camping is available year round, and there is nothing better than stepping out the front door of your travel trailer rental from Red Wing into the natural wonders that surround you. There are several events that take place in the park throughout the year, so it might be worth checking what’s on before making a booking.

Exploring the City

For those interesting in history, a visit to Red Wing can help you step back in time, with six museums to explore, as well as a number of architectural icons and historic homes. One of the best ways to see the many sites of downtown is to take a self-guided walking tour, taking you through the historic district with over 25 historic stops along the way. Museums include the Aliveo Military Museum, the Red Wing Marine Museum, American Ski Jumping Museum and Hall of Fame, the Pottery Museum, the Red Wing Shoe Store and Museum and various others.

While taking a stroll through the Historic Downtown District and Pottery District, you will find a good combination of both locally owned shops and world-famous brands, many of which were founded directly in Red Wing itself. A stop in the famous Red Wing Shoes flagship store is a must, and as well as offering custom fitting, they are also home to the world’s largest boot, which is an impressive size 638 and a half! You could spend hours popping in and out of the many shops, and when you get hungry, why not stop in one of the many eateries that you’ll find along the way before retiring back to your Red Wing camper rental.

The arts and culture scene will be evident as soon as you step foot in the city, with a number of outdoor sculptures and art galleries, as well as regular entertainment in the Sheldon Theater. In the theater, you will find state of the art technology and world-class performances, all houses in stunning, turn of the century architecture.
