Founded in 1890, Park Rapids is a peaceful city in the Heartland Lakes region of Minnesota, as well as the seat for Hubbard County. The original town was named by Frank C. Rice for the rapids and prairies that once existed in the area before the damming of the Fishhook River and the subsequent creation of the Fishhook Lake.

Many people have not heard of this dreamy town in the heart of Minnesota, but when you book an RV in Park Rapids, you can see for yourself just how enchanting the small city is. First and foremost, all of the lush forests and lakeside parks in the region make for stellar outdoor recreation possibilities, all of which are options when you rent an RV in Park Rapids and set out to find peace and quiet in the great outdoors. In the vibrant downtown area of Park Rapids, you can stroll on sublime riverfront trails, shopping avenues, and observe old buildings erected back when Park Rapids first became a city.

Park Rapids is located on State Highway 71, although no interstates pass through the area. The town is located between nearby Bemidji, Minnesota and Fargo over in the neighboring state of North Dakota.

The Great Outdoors

There are lots of ways to make good use of your Park Rapids motorhome rental in the incredible “Land of Ten Thousand Lakes.” Park Rapids is virtually surrounded by state forests and parks, so the planning stages of your trip can be quite fun. Itasca Lake State Park is one of the many excellent natural areas close to town that you can enjoy. The park is home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, an amazing place equal parts beautiful and important. Interestingly enough, the park is the second oldest state park in the entire country, created back in 1891. The park is a certified National Natural Landmark renowned for its virgin forest and hiking trails. There are even places to swim, fish, hike, and camp out in your Park Rapids motorhome rental.

A bit farther away but still reasonably close to town, Maplewood State Park is an undeniably beautiful place to unwind on vacation. The park is found in the Leaf Mountains, with lovely, panoramic views and a flurry of wildlife. There are lots of peaceful hiking trails weaving through the woods, and a few archaeological sites dating back thousands of years to the ancient native people who called the land home. Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is another park found beside one of the state’s many lakes, with glorious views of the water and ample space to use when you need a spot to settle in with your Park Rapids campervan rental. Besides the amazing scenery and wide-open lake, there are burial mounds and ceremonial structures dating back thousands of years that you can see, left behind by the Sioux people.

If you want to see a national park during your brief trip to the stunning northern states, Isle Royale National Park is the place to be. You won’t be able to bring your Park Rapids RV rental to this far-flung island by the Canadian border, but you can take a boat there to see one of the least visited parks in the country. Don’t be fooled by its lack of popularity; however, this hidden gem remains a well-kept secret due to its remote status way up in Lake Superior.

RV Parks

Finding a place to stay the night with your Park Rapids motorhome rental should be easy; Northern Minnesota is a hotspot for summertime recreation, so there are plenty of campgrounds in the area. In-We-Go Resort is one of the nicer options for upscale camping, with lots of awesome features like a wide-open fishing and swimming lake, an in-ground pool, a game room, boat launches, and an outdoor movie theater.

Round Bay Resort could also be a great home away from home, with some of the state’s best fishing out on the adjacent Third Crow Wing Lake. Sandy beaches, fishing docks, rental cabins, and a rustic feel are all part of the experience.

Big Pines RV Park has a small and intimate feel. There are hundreds of different camping sites to choose from, some of which are situated along the lake. There are also rental cabins and fishing docks here for boaters and fishing enthusiasts.

City Attractions

This idyllic community in Northern Minnesota is one of the most picturesque small towns that you could ever hope to find. Friendly vibes and a welcoming atmosphere are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, however, with many other exciting reasons to hang out in town and see what Park Rapids has to offer. Jasper’s Theater is a delightful barn-shaped performance space in the woods which routinely puts on live entertainment. Music, comedy acts, and soulful acting make for a great way to spend a rainy day.

The local shopping and amusement center on the north end of the city is another fun-filled destination, particularly for those traveling with their children. There are go-karts, bumper boats, escape rooms, laser tag, rock climbing walls, outdoor mazes, and a whole lot more. You can even pick up some souvenirs for loved ones back home, or just peruse through the large gift shop on-site.

Hubbard County Historical Museum is operated by the local historical society, a truly excellent resource for those who enjoy learning. Here you can take informative tours, gain insight into the complex history of Park Rapids, all housed in the original, ornate county courthouse. This elegant brick building has 14-karat gold trim on its letters out front and a bevy of other impressive features that architectural enthusiasts will admire.
