This small town sits in the southwestern portion of the state of Minnesota. This is a very rural area, situated around 130 miles southwest of the large metro area of Minneapolis, and around 100 miles west of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This area is flat, farm country. The name of the town comes from three islands found in the nearby lake, one of which towers over the other two like a mountain.

There are wineries and vineyards, as well as numerous historical and cultural sites, and museums, to be found locally. The Ingalls family, made famous in the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, was originally from this area. Several of the local attractions are dedicated to the lives of the family members.
