Forming part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area, Kimball is a small town to the west of Minneapolis. It was named after an early settler, Frye Kimball, with a post office operating in the town since 1887.

Kimball’s proximity to the Clearwater chain of lakes makes it an ideal place for anglers to rent an RV while exploring central Minnesota. It’s well-served by family-friendly campgrounds and just 30 minutes' drive from all the shops and services of St. Cloud.

Discover Kimball

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Kimball and make the short drive south to the Stanley Eddy Memorial County Park, which lies between Lake Frances and West Lake Sylvia. It’s divided into three units of rolling hills and wetlands that are traversed by hiking and horseback riding trails. Enjoy the scenic views across Wright Country from the overlook in the South Unit of Stanley Eddy Memorial County Park while keeping your eyes peeled for red-shouldered hawks that are particularly prevalent in the spring.

If you’re a keen angler, there are plenty of lakes where you can try your luck at fishing for largemouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch. Head to Clearwater Lake, which sprawls across more than 3,100 acres, or the adjacent Pleasant Lake that connects through the Clearwater / Pleasant Regional Park. Also part of the Clearwater chain of lakes but slightly closer to Kimball is Augusta Lake, which houses bluegill and crappie.

Kimball is also a good base for exploring the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, a 30,700-acre protected area that encompasses wooded forests, oak savanna, and wetlands. More than 230 species of birds have been recorded within the refuge, together with almost 60 mammal species and 25 reptiles/amphibians. Soak up the views from the top of Blue Hill or explore the observation decks along the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive, with canoeing also popular along the St. Francis River and Battle Brook.

RV Parks

Book a motorhome rental in Kimball and head north to the St. Cloud Campground and RV Park, which offers just over 100 open and wooded sites. There are full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service available, as well as laundry facilities, a swimming pool, and a 2,800-square-foot Rally Center.

Also nearby is the St Cloud Clearwater RV Park, a family-friendly campground that caters to all RV sizes, including big rigs. Aside from their 30 or 50-amp service, there’s also a heated saltwater swimming pool, shuffleboard, and a mini-golf course.

Or, you can stay at the Riversedge RV Park in the community of Becker where you’ll find large wooded lots overlooking the park’s river or wildlife-filled pond. There are laundry facilities and a large pavilion available, as well as walking trails and lush lawns where pets are welcome.

You can also make the 25-minute drive south to Litchfield where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Kimball and stroll through the town center to explore the unique shops and historic buildings. Of particular note is the Kimball City Hall, which was built in 1908 when the community was in its early stages and known as Kimball Prairie. In 1982, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an embodiment of public service importance in communities during the early 20th century.

Another destination to delve into the local history is at the Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum, which is a 20-minute drive south of Kimball. It’s housed in the heritage-listed Universal Laboratories building and features a range of exhibits that explore the industrial and cultural history of the region. Discover how raw ergot farmed in the area was used to produce pharmaceutical drugs and why Dassel became known as the “Seed Capital of the World,” with locally-made arts and crafts also available for purchase at the gift shop.

If you’re visiting during the winter months, head north to Powder Ridge, a ski and snowboarding resort that offers lessons and lift passes for accessing the slopes independently. Hone your skills in the beginner-friendly Cedar Park or tackle the advanced rails, boxes, and ledges of the North Park. Once you’ve built up an appetite, you can grab a bite to eat at the bar and grill or soak up the vistas from the restaurant.

Kimball is home to a grocery store where you can pick up supplies, as well as a couple of eateries if you want to dine out. There is also a gas station if you need to fill up your campervan rental in Kimball.

Whether you’re visiting Stearns County for its fishing lakes or industrial history, book an RV in Kimball and start exploring!
