Situated between Chanarambie Creek and the Rock River, Edgerton is a small city near Minnesota’s borders with South Dakota and Iowa. It was laid out in 1879 and named after a local politician, Alonzo J. Edgerton, with the settlement officially incorporated eight years later.

Today, Edgerton is a great place to rent an RV and base yourself while exploring the wildlife reserves and parks of southwest Minnesota, including the bison-filled Blue Mounds State Park. It’s within proximity to scenic campgrounds and all the services of the county seat in Pipestone.

Discover Edgerton

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Edgerton and head west to the Split Rock Creek State Park, which is located just to the south of Pipestone. It centers around a sprawling reservoir that was created in 1938 with the damming of Split Rock Creek and features a beautifully constructed bridge made from Sioux quartzite in the same year. Stretch your legs along one of the walking trails or cast a fishing line to catch walleye, perch, and bass, with the reservoir a popular swimming destination during the summer months.

To the south of Edgerton lies the Blue Mounds State Park, which was created to protect a significant herd of American bison that graze one of the largest tracts of prairie remaining in Minnesota. It’s renowned for a 100-foot-high escarpment of Sioux quartzite that lures trekkers to the park, as well as encompassing a 1,250-foot line of rocks that were aligned by Plains Indians to mark the sunrise and sunsets of the spring and fall equinoxes. Aside from around 100 bison, the park is also home to a small population of coyotes and deer, in addition to plentiful birdlife.

If you prefer to get out on the water, make the 50-minute drive north to the Lake Shetek State Park, which protects the headwaters of the Des Moines River. Canoeing, boating, and fishing are all popular activities, with walleye, northern pike, and perch regularly caught. The park is traversed by around 14 miles of hiking trails, including a short interpretive trail that accesses Loon Island and a section of the multi-use Casey Jones State Trail that connects to Currie.

RV Parks

Book a motorhome rental in Edgerton and make the short drive north to the Pipestone RV Campground, which sprawls across 15 acres of grassy flatlands in the Tall Grass Prairie Region. There are shaded pull-through sites with full hookups available, as well as a heated pool, children’s playground, and an 18-hole mini-golf course.

Closer to Edgerton is the Rock River Park Campground, which is located in the far southwest of the city and within walking distance of most businesses. There’s a fishing pond and also modern playground equipment for guests to take advantage of, with all of the 16 RV sites having water hookups and eight offering sewer hookups.

A 30-minute drive east of Edgerton will take you to Slayton and the City Limits RV Park, which offers eight RV sites with full hookups. Internet is available, and there are fire rings at each site, as well as direct access to a bar and grill if you want to eat out.

You can also make the 40-minute drive south to Worthington where there’s also a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Edgerton and drive north to the Pipestone National Monument, which protects the sacred quarries of the region’s Native American people. They were considered neutral territory where a number of different tribes could quarry stone for their ceremonial pipes and have now been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop in at the visitor’s center to gain a deeper insight into the natural and cultural history of the area, then follow the short, self-guided trail to view the pipestone quarries and their picturesque waterfall.

While you’re in Pipestone, don’t miss a photo opportunity at the Pipestone Water Tower, a 132-foot-tall landmark that’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in 1920 on a design by architect L.P. Wolfe to pump and store water from an underground reservoir. It’s significant in that it was constructed of poured concrete and provides a focal point for the town’s annual Water Tower Festival that’s held in late June.

Edgerton makes a good base for visiting Sioux Falls, which lies just across the border in South Dakota. Soak up the views of the city’s namesake falls from the Falls Park observation tower, then delve into the local history at the Old Courthouse Museum. Tour the Queen Anne-style residence of the state’s first U.S. senator at the Pettigrew Home & Museum or get up close to marine life and butterflies in Sertoma Park.

Edgerton is home to a small supermarket where you can grab basic supplies, as well as a bakery where you can pick up homemade goods. There is also a gas station if you need to fill up your campervan in Edgerton.

Whether you’re visiting Pipestone County for its Native American history or wildlife reserves, book an RV in Edgerton and start planning your southwestern Minnesota explorations.
