Tekonsha is a small stopover town for many people visiting the Battle Creek region of western Michigan. There’s not too much there, but it’s conveniently located next to Interstate 69 and has a few restaurants to eat in and a couple of shops to browse. Most wouldn’t give it a second glance, but that’s one of the great things when you book an RV in Tekonsha – the chance to explore a less touristy section of the state and see the gems that it has to offer.
Doing this will take some searching though; there are a handful of attractions in the area, so some driving will be necessary to reach the ones farther out. That’s part of the experience of getting a motorhome rental in Tekonsha though– enjoying the rolling hills of southwestern Michigan and popping into small towns that don’t get too many visitors.
One of the closest places to get outside and enjoy nature when you choose a travel trailer rental in Tekonsha is the Potawatomi Recreation Area. There are quite a few activities here including trails for hiking and biking, a pond with paddleboat rentals available, and even a small rec room with billiards to pass the time if a storm swoops in.
If you just want a nice stroll and some good views of the sunset though, spend the day in the town of Marshall a little to the north of Tekonsha. The riverwalk along the North Branch of the Kalamazoo River is great for a romantic evening or an outing with the family. But if you’re hoping to hit the links you won’t find any courses too close to Tekonsha; they’ll need to take a trip down to Coldwater or up to Battle Creek to play a round of golf.
One of the best places to day trip when you’re in southwestern Michigan is Indiana Dunes National Park. Formally known as a national lakeshore, the park offers excellent hiking trails along the windswept sand dunes of Lake Michigan. The beaches there are fantastic too, so be sure to bring a towel, some shade, and a good book to read while you lounge on the powdery strip of sand.
Despite its small size and lack of major tourist attractions nearby, Tekonsha actually has quite a few RV parks within easy driving distance. The closest is Angel Cove RV Park, not far to the south and near the town of Coldwater. Many of their sites have full hookups for your RV rental from Tekonsha along with showers and a dump station. If you have the proper state license, there’s also fishing in the nearby lake.
Another option is the Harbor Cove RV Resort that’s just off Route 89. Not only do they have tons of sites with full hookups and fire rings, but they also have boat rentals and laundry facilities available. The park is wedged between a small pond and a lake, so many of the sites have some fantastic views, and there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and fishing.
If those places all sound a bit too developed and you’d prefer to get off the beaten path with your camper rental near Tekonsha, you might prefer Tri-Lake Trails Campground to the north of town. While they still have RV hookups, the general feel is more rustic, with most visitors choosing the sites for their beautiful woodland surroundings rather than amenities.
All of the attractions to check out are actually outside the Tekonsha, so a bit of driving will probably be involved to reach your activities for the day. If you’re an animal lover, especially one who can appreciate the more scaly species, you’ll definitely enjoy the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary in Athens. You’d probably wouldn't expect to see alligators outside the swamplands of Louisiana or Florida, but here they are in the cold and dry hills of Michigan. It’s a reptile sanctuary that takes in hundreds of animals, many of which are exotic pets turned in by owners who could no longer care for them. A visit to the sanctuary is highly educational, and most who come will walk away with a newfound respect for the reptilian creatures.
For those of you that have never experienced a drive-in movie theater, you’ll be in for a treat when you rent an RV here. There’s one down in Coldwater, and nothing quite beats watching a flick from the comforts of your vehicle while chowing down on a bucket of popcorn. It’s an experience that will take anyone back to a much simpler time for moviegoers.
If you prefer live theater, check out the Tibbits Opera House, also located in Coldwater. It’s one of the oldest theaters in Michigan and is worth seeing just for the architecture and history. It's even better to visit during one of their performances, which include plays, musicals, and even stand-up comedy shows. If you’re looking for a date night activity when you’re in Tekonsha, this is the place to go.
