North Adams is a very small town in southern Michigan, not far from the border with Indiana and Ohio. The area around North Adams is known as the Irish Hills region and is popular with tourists due to its picturesque rolling hills and numerous lakes. When you book an RV in North Adams, there might be some road tripping involved if you hope to see some of the area's more popular attractions.

North Adams is not well connected with the rest of Michigan’s transportation network, with only a couple of narrow two-lane roads coming from small towns like Jonesville and Hillsdale. For many visitors, that’s exactly what they’re looking for – a tranquil vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Discover North Adams

The Great Outdoors

While North Adams might not have too much going on in the nightlife or fine dining department, what it does have is some beautiful wide-open spaces surrounding it. McCourtie Park in Somerset Center is one of the more popular outdoor destinations in the North Adams region thanks to its manicured green spaces and artsy walkways. It’s an ideal place to go for a stroll with the dog or have a family picnic.

For an inland beach vacation though, head to Manitou Beach in the Irish Hills. Before the interstate highway system, Manitou Beach was as close to the sand as many southern Michiganders could get, which turned it into a populous resort town. Now far fewer visitors come each summer, meaning you’ll have a more room to spread out a blanket and work on your tan.

Lake Hudson Recreation Area might be the premier place to spend some time in nature when you get a travel trailer rental in North Adams though. It’s a 30-minute drive away, and it’s well worth it once you see the tranquil waters of the lake and the massive parkland surrounding it. This is one of the more popular locations for fishing in southern Michigan too and is frequented by many birdwatchers.

RV Parks

Given North Adams' small size, there aren’t any RV parks or campgrounds in town or right outside of it. Moscow Maples, in the town of Moscow, is one of the closest places to camp when you choose a motorhome rental in North Adams. Their sites have full hookups, and there’s a swimming pool and also hot showers on site. The park is right off of Route 12, so it’s quite convenient if you’re thinking about visiting the Detroit area too.

Another option is Minster RV Park, which is on the south shore of Round Lake. It’s a comfortable park with hookups available for your RV rental from North Adams, and there’s some decent fishing in the lake if you have the proper state license. This park is a little more off the beaten path and may be more suitable for campers who want to relax and are less concerned with having easy access to all the attractions in the area.

There’s also Gateway Park Campground on the edge of South Sand Lake, not far from Hillsdale. Many of their sites have full hookups, and there are organized activities for all the guests in the park (dinners, games, etc). The campground has a heated saltwater pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and paddleboard rentals to use in the lake so you’ll never be bored at Gateway Park. It also has good access to Route 12 and is ideal for people booking a camper rental in North Adams, but wanting to do some day trips around southern Michigan.

Exploring the City

There aren’t too many attractions in North Adams proper; some driving will be necessary to find sites of interest when you rent an RV here. One of the closest attractions is located in Jonesville, the Grosvenor House Museum. It’s not very big but offers an interesting perspective on Midwestern life through the ages. The house is built in the Victorian style and has many of the original appliances from the turn of the 20th century.

If you’re a NASCAR fan, Michigan International Speedway is only a short drive away from North Adams. Big races are held during the summer months, and smaller events take place in the spring and autumn. If you do make it to one of the NASCAR races, be sure to bring some picnicking gear, as they tend to be an all-day party.

For a selection of restaurant options, you can travel a little way to the west, to either Jonesville or Hillsdale, if you’re craving something specific. Those towns will have the basics that you would expect in a small Midwestern town: pizza, burgers, a few Mexican joints, and a lot of diners.
