The town of Mason, Michigan is just a short drive from the state’s capital of Lansing and within day-tripping distance of the cities of Detroit and Ann Arbor. It sits in the palm of Michigan’s mitten shape, falling almost exactly in the center of it. The town is relatively flat, making it quite walkable if you’d prefer to leave your travel trailer rental from Mason back at the park. It’s also connected to the Lansing bus network if you would like to visit the capital when you book an RV in Mason.

Mason was originally founded as a possible state capital for the state of Michigan, with its central location being its biggest advantage. However, nearby Lansing was chosen in 1877, thanks to the Grand and Red Cedar River having more potential for power generation. As a compromise, Mason was selected as the seat of Ingham County, despite Lansing also falling inside its borders.

It plays host to a fantastic waterpark in addition to its many hiking and biking trails; the kids will especially enjoy the splash pad on a hot summer day. There’s also the River Trail in Lansing, which extends for 13 miles along the Grand and Red Cedar River from Michigan State University to Dietrich Park. The park is home to multiple festivals throughout the year, so you may want to check their schedule to see if anything exciting is happening during your visit.

Another great green space is Burchfield Park near the town of Holt. The park is huge and mostly undeveloped, beckoning visitors to explore the extensive network of trails running through its forests. If you’re into disc golf, there’s also a decent course laid out over the park. However, if you’d prefer a more traditional game of golf, there are several great courses within easy driving distance of Mason.

If you’re looking for watersports though, Sleepy Hollow State Park, which lies not too far north of Lansing, could be a great choice. The massive Lake Orvid is its centerpiece and is a great place for renting a kayak and paddling around for a few hours. If you have the proper license, there are also several species of game fish including muskellunge and channel catfish that are great fun to catch.
