Lake Odessa, or Lake O as it is commonly called by its residents, is a tiny enclave in central Michigan between the cities of Lansing and Grand Rapids. The town has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when the Russell Brothers first arrived to create a family settlement in the wilderness of Michigan. At first, the town was called Russell Settlement, and later on Bonanza, before being switched to Lake Odessa when the town location was moved to accommodate the newly built Detroit, Lansing, and Northern Railroad. The name Lake Odessa was inspired by the Odessa Township it resides in, which in turn was named for Odessa in Ukraine in an attempt to stand out in a state full of recycled names.

Now, when you book an RV in Lake Odessa, you can settle down and enjoy some sweet relaxation, either on the shores of Jordan Lake or in one of Michigan’s many nature parks. This diverse region is full of surprises, a real evergreen paradise that is best seen while driving a Lake Odessa camper rental.

Discover Lake Odessa

The Great Outdoors

Lake Odessa is firmly located in a gorgeous part of Michigan, with vast potential to provide you with the outdoors-centric vacation of your dreams. Unimaginable beauty lies around every corner, and when you rent an RV, you’ll have access to nearly anything you want to see. Yankee Springs Recreation Area is a fabulous place to explore when you first arrive in town, no more than a half hour's drive from Lake Odessa. This natural area is truly a wonderland for outdoors enthusiasts, with nearly every activity you could think of. There are over 50 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, in addition to hundreds of camping spots where you can stay with your Lake Odessa RV rental by owner. Of the nine lakes in the park, Gun Lake is the largest, and the best for boating, fishing, and swimming. Even in the wintertime, you can snowshoe or cross-country ski.

A short drive west to the shores of Lake Michigan is all it takes to see Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Here you can find miles of pristine beaches, dozens of scenic hiking trails, and some massive, 200-foot-tall sand dunes. The views from atop these dunes are incredible, especially while the sun is setting over Lake Michigan. Muskegon State Park over in the city of Muskegon is another lakefront park worth your time and attention, especially if you can’t get enough of the water. The park also has a few miles of delightfully sandy seashores, as well as fishing piers, picnic pavilions, and two campgrounds you can utilize when you rent an RV. In the wintertime, you can go ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and there is even a luge track for US Olympians to utilize for training.

There is one national park in Michigan called Isle Royale National Park, but it is located far to the north by the Canadian border, so it might be easier to head to Huron National Forest. This stunning nature area is nearly half a million acres of enchanting forest, with wilderness areas, secluded beaches, picturesque lakes, and tons of nature trails weaving through the woods. You can camp, do some backcountry trekking, or even go skiing in the forest when you visit.

RV Parks

Locating a campground for the Lake Odessa RV rental is hardly a challenge in such a camper-friendly state, so it's up to you to pinpoint exactly what you want or need for your next vacation. If it is a resort-like atmosphere you are after, Whispering Waters Campground is worth considering. This peaceful retreat in the countryside has waterfront camping on the Thornapple River, a fitness center, a pool, a dog park, a playground, and some sports courts to enjoy.

City Attractions

In Lake Odessa, there isn’t much to do after you have finished walking through the tiny downtown area. There are a few older buildings and some awesome restaurants, but not much else. Jordan Lake is the main attraction in town, and some of the best bars and restaurants have beach frontage along Jordan Lake, making for a fantastic day of suntanning, swimming, volleyball, barbecuing, and listening to music.

If you visit some of the larger towns nearby like Hastings or Ionia, you can easily keep yourself occupied with the wide range of attractions in either place. Historic Charlton Park in Hastings is a mesmerizing collection of antiquated buildings, museums, and outdoor spaces. These beautifully restored, brightly painted businesses and informative museum provide people with insight into the town and region’s respective cultures, with plenty of historical memorabilia and artifacts to tell the story. Hiking, boating, or taking guided tours are all ways to see this incredible resource.

Up in Ionia, the Historic Downtown Main Street has its own vibrant surprises. The street is teeming with old buildings that are historically significant, like the John C. Blanchard House, an ornate Victorian home with elegant brickwork and style. This work of art is even made from sandstone produced in Ionia itself, further adding to its mystique.
