Houghton Lake is an unincorporated community in Roscommon County, Michigan with no local government, but should not be confused with the community of Houghton on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Houghton Lake is thought to have been first settled in 1873 by a family who moved south from Chesaning, Michigan to homestead. Timber production was largely responsible for the community's establishment and growth, and numerous logging camps had popped up by the mid-1800s. Other towns appeared, and railways were built to support the logging industry, which by the late 1800s had become the area's primary industry. Houghton Lake was established some time prior to 1879 but was originally name Roscommon; it was renamed in honor of Michigan's first state geologist, Douglass Houghton. Today it is one of Michigan's top resort destinations.

Book an RV in Roscommon County, and you are ready to begin exploring Michigan the way the early settlers did (albeit in more comfortable surroundings). There are other towns that are worth visiting while you're here. Grayling is the host of the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon which began in July of 1947 and has been held here ever since. Cadillac has two sister cities, Mölnlycke, Sweden, and Rovaniemi, Finland. Kalkaska has two major festivals, the National Trout Festival in April, and the WinterFest in January. Your Houghton Lake travel trailer rental is your invitation to visit these places and others.

The Great Outdoors

Huron-Manistee National Forests is a multi-use area that provides for selective logging practices, wildlife refuge, and public recreation. It consists of dry sand prairie remnants, coastal marshlands, oak savannas, and other varieties of ecosystems. Visitors can use the park for hiking, cycling, and camping. Hunting and fishing are allowed, and it is a great destination for wildlife viewing and photography. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities within the forest.

Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is an undeveloped outdoor recreation area where guests can enjoy hiking the numerous trails that wind through the marshes, rivers, and floodplain forest or follow a scenic auto route through the park. Sections of the area are set aside for agricultural activities or urban development, and the park serves as a sanctuary for migratory birds and endangered plant and animal species. Hunting and fishing are allowed in season. Park your Houghton Lake camper rental, and you can use it as nature blind while sitting in comfort.

Arcadia Dunes C.S. Mott Nature Preserve has many miles of hiking trails where guests can explore the dunes, forests, and other landscapes that make up the park. There are working farms neighboring the preserve that are also protected under the park's mandate, ensuring that the area's history of agricultural activity will be jointly protected. The trails are suitable for mountain biking, and visitors can expect to see a range of wildflowers, views of Lake Michigan, and much more.

Exploring The City

There are several golf courses for those needing a fix and a local distillery with a very creative take on the spirits they distill on-site and the mixed drinks being offered. The distillery has a limited menu, but guests may bring in outside food or ask to have food delivered from nearby restaurants. Don't forget to take your Houghton Lake motorhome rental for a spin around the countryside; opportunities like this can be few and far between, and should not be missed.
