Harsens Island, Michigan is both a town as well as an actual island in Lake St. Clair at the mouth of the St. Clair River. Harsens Island is just across the lake from Detroit, nestled right up against the Canadian border.

Harsens Island was first named for Jacob Harsen, a Dutch settler from New York who purchased the island from local, indigenous people at the tail end of the Revolutionary War. Harsens Island would for years be stuck in a no man's land between the two countries, finally being assigned to the United States after the War of 1812.

The island town is accessible by ferry and sits in one of the most heavily used shipping passages in the world, due to its strategic location between Canada and the United States, linking Lake Huron with Lake Erie. This fertile island has long been admired and desired for its suitable living conditions, dating back thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. An eclectic mix of amazing wildlife, coupled with spectacular scenery make this lush island paradise a definite vacation spot to consider. When you book an RV in Harsens Island, you’ll feel at peace in a tranquil space away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Great Outdoors

You won’t believe how spectacular the wilderness areas are in Michigan, particularly when you rent an RV around Harsens Island. Algonac State Park is directly across the river from Harsens Island, with enchanting views and tranquil hiking paths weaving through the woods. A vast majority of the park is undeveloped, so a rustic experience is part of the fun when you bring your Harsens Island camper rental for a visit. There are over a dozen endangered species living in this protected conservation area, and numerous places to fish, kayak, swim, hike, have a picnic, or camp out by the water.

Lakeport State Park lets you delight in coastal views, as it sits right on the edge of Lake Huron. This unbelievably beautiful park is located a short drive north by the town of Lakeport, complete with playgrounds, sandy beaches, swimming areas, a camp store, and a campground where you can park the Harsens Island motorhome rental.

On the other side of Detroit, in between Ann Arbor and Lansing, lies the massive Waterloo State Recreation Area. This amazing nature park is one of the most popular weekend getaways in all of Michigan, with over 20,000 acres of fertile land and lush forests. Waterloo State Recreation Area is linked together with the Pinckney Recreation Area by means of a 36-mile trail, commonly taken by backpackers and long-distance trek enthusiasts. Both recreation areas have extensive nature path systems, beachfront swimming areas, lakes, horseback riding trails, mountain biking areas, and quiet campgrounds should you need a place to camp with your Harsens Island motorhome rental.

RV Parks

Visitors should find it easy to locate a place to settle during their trip, with ample campgrounds and RV parks to patronize in the area. Riverview Campground Marina is a cozy getaway by the river, with its own marina and docks.

Northpointe Shores RV Resort is a place to stay along the shores of Lake St. Clair, with gorgeous bathroom facilities, bonfire pits, beachfront access, and more. There are lots of golf courses, restaurants, shops, and other entertainment options close to this resort.

City Attractions

Aside from stopping by the Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Historical Society, you won’t find many attractions on the island. The historical society operates and maintains a fascinating museum, however, housed in the old firehouse that once served the island. There are historical artifacts, photographs, and other informative exhibits located in the museum that you can learn from.

For everything else, your best bet might be to take a day trip to Detroit in your Harsens Island RV rental. There is an overwhelming number of things to do when you reach this revitalized city, including a number of interesting museums. The Motown Museum pays homage to the soulful music of Detroit, in the very same home where many of the greatest hits from the Motown Era were recorded. There are incredible photos, costumes, records, and pieces of art adorning the walls of Hitsville, USA, the nickname for this slice of history.

Detroit Institute of Arts is an impressive collection of masterpieces from all over the world, from impressionist paintings by Monet, to African tribal masks used in traditional ceremonies. There are well over 60,000 works of art in the museum, including the General Motors Center for African American Artwork, one of the museum's partners.

If you find yourself needing a taste of the city’s nightlife, the casino in Detroit is one of the premier places to gamble, drink, see live music, and socialize in all of the Midwest. Live entertainment acts, poker tournaments, and amazing restaurants are all on offer at this flashy place.
