Near the “The Thumb” of Michigan, the town of Frankenmuth was founded by German settlers in the mid-1800s. The community has always been proud of its German heritage and even pledged to speak German over English when the town was first settled. Today, you’ll still likely run into German-speakers, and some of the street signs are even in German. When you rent an RV in Frankenmuth, MI, you’ll also be able to enjoy some of the best German cuisine you can find this side of the Atlantic. Visitors to Frankenmuth can enjoy a relatively central location that allows easy access to Saginaw Bay, the forests of Michigan, and the Great Lake of Lake Huron.

When you book an RV in Saginaw County, you will be able to explore a wide variety of Michigan’s biome and ecosystems as well as a whirlwind of culture. You can spend your morning on the shores of Saginaw Bay and then the evening at a German bierhaus in Frankenmuth, or hike through some of Michigan’s many forests and then sit down to a warm slice of locally grown apple or cherry pie. No matter what you are looking to get out of your Michigan expedition, you are going to walk away with plenty of memories.

The Great Outdoors

Just a short drive to the west is the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw. This marsh and grassland preserve works to protect the diversity of biomes in the central Michigan area. Not only that, but the preserve is a popular stopover point for migratory birds heading north or south. With roughly 10,000 acres of space for these birds to rest, the park comes to life in the spring and fall as the migratory birds make their way. You are likely to see songbirds, waterfowl, and even Canadian geese as you head out on the network of trails. If you’re visiting in the summer, you can drive along the Wildlife Drive and see even more of this beautiful refuge.

A short drive north of town, along the banks of the Saginaw Bay, is the Tobico Marsh Nature Area in Bay City. Tobico Marsh has managed to remain relatively wild, with very little outside influence or industrial damage done to the park. So, Michigan decided to preserve the marsh as well as it can by setting up the nature area. Visitors to the marsh can enjoy seeing what the wetlands around the bay once looked like and enjoy escaping to the relatively pristine environment that is often overlooked by even the locals. You can head out on the trails and see even more of this carefully cared for land.

For an easy day trip, you can head south to the Holly Recreation Area in Holly. Comprised of woodlands and fields, this 8,000-acre expanse serves as an outdoor lover's oasis within a more populated region of the state. You can explore more than 30 miles of trails through the forest, try your hand at some local hunting (with the appropriate permits), or instead rent a boat or set up an umbrella and enjoy some time at the lake. If you’re visiting in the summer, part of the lake is turned into a water park filled with inflatable slides, obstacles, and even a water trampoline.

RV Parks

When you secure an RV rental in Frankenmuth, you are going to want to make sure you secure a place to spend the night so that you have the energy necessary to keep your Michigan expedition going. Luckily enough, there are plenty of campgrounds and RV parks in the area that are worth considering.

On the south side of town is the Frankenmuth Jellystone Park Camp Resort. At Jellystone, guests can expect full hookups as well as water/electric only hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and a swimming pool. There are several recreational activities offered on-site, such as miniature golf and a game room.

A little farther south of town is the Pine Ridge RV Campground. At Pine Ridge, amenities include full hookup sites, restroom and shower facilities, laundry facilities, and a campfire at each site. Guests traveling with children will also have access to an on-site playground.

Explore the City

When you rent an RV here, you can head out to explore the local area. There is so much to see and do in this American German village that you will quickly fill your days.

If you want to learn more about how this unique community came to be, you can visit the Frankenmuth Historical Museum on the south side of town. At home in a turn-of-the-century hotel, the museum is home to artifacts that showcase how the community has grown from just a couple dozen settlers into the city that it is today. You can even visit the Wolkensdörfer log house from the early days of the settlement.

If you want to challenge yourself a little, you can head to the Frankenmuth Aerial Park. Filled with ropes courses, zip lines, and swings all strewn about the upper canopy of the forest, you can push yourself in a safe and controlled space.

For the lovers of all things Christmas, a trip to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is a must. Arguably one of the biggest Christmas markets in the world, Bronner’s is filled with ornaments, lights, stockings, and other Christmas decorations. Open year-round, you can truly celebrate Christmas in July as you wander through the various rooms of the store.

During your Michigan expedition with the Frankenmuth campervan rental, you are going to need to restock and refuel to keep going. Luckily enough, there are plenty of gas stations and grocery stores in town.

When you rent an RV in Frankenmuth, you can sit down to a heaping plate of chicken schnitzel and a German beer; you probably won't find a more authentic representation of German food this side of the Atlantic.
