The town of Carson City lies in the palm of Michigan’s mitten shape, making it one of the best places to base yourself when exploring the state with an RV rental. When you book an RV in Carson City, you won’t find very many clear cut attractions, but rather near a number of major roads that can help you to access some of the nearby towns and sights. Nearby Highway 66 runs from the state's southern border to the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula, stopping in towns like Battle Creek, Ionia, and Sturgis.

The area surrounding Carson City is populated with beautiful lowland forests, and its downtown has retained much of its historical charm. While there might not be many attractions in Carson City itself, most visitors come for the laid-back vibes and the chance to experience rural living in a beautiful setting.

Discover Carson City

The Great Outdoors

One of the best natural green spaces to visit when you choose a camper rental in Carson City is the Maple River State Game Area to the southeast of town. While it is popular with hunters when the waterfowl are in season, it’s also a fantastic location for hikers to explore during the summer months when wildlife is more numerous, and human visitors are fewer. The trails aren’t very developed, so don’t expect an easy stroll through the park; though the rustic paths are fantastic for birdwatching.

Another solid choice for hiking is the Ionia River Trail near the Ionia County Fairgrounds. The three-mile-long path follows the Grand River and is flat enough to be attempted by hikers of nearly all abilities. Also on the Grand River is the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail, which is only a short drive away.

Anyone interesting in adding a fishing trip to their Carson City adventure will want to stop at Crystal Lake just north of town. There’s a boat launch on the northeast corner, but there are no boat rentals nearby, so you’re most likely relegated to shore angling. Afterward, stop in for dinner or drinks at one of the restaurants on the lake; they have the best sunset views in town.

RV Parks

As there aren’t too many tourists visiting the Carson City region, RV parks and campgrounds are far fewer than what you’d see in some of the more coastal parts of the state. The nearest dedicated RV park is Half Moon Lake Resort off Highway 66 outside of Sheridan. While it’s still rather rustic, it does have full hookups for your motorhome rental from Carson City along with a decent fishing pond (as the lake is not private, you’ll need a fishing license). A fair amount of those staying at the park are there for the season, but short-term visitors are welcomed and can have an enjoyable experience.

Another option is the South Shore Campground just outside the town of Crystal. Its location on Crystal Lake makes this ideal for visitors hoping for some peace and quiet in nature when they get a travel trailer rental in Carson City. The park has full hookups and its own private beach on the lake where you can launch a kayak or canoe.

If you don't require amenities when you rent an RV in Carson City, there’s always the Walmart parking lot in Greenville. You’ll need the manager’s permission to camp there, but it’s not bad for a few nights if you come prepared for no hookups or amenities.

Exploring the City

The town of Carson City is small and can easily be explored in just a couple of hours; to find more attractions, you’ll need to travel outside the city limits. An orchard and cider mill sits on the edge of the Maple River Game Area and is where you’ll find some of the best apple-based products in the state. Stop in for a pie, some refreshing cider, or just to watch how everything is made. Few things say fall quite like a trip to an orchard.

If you’re a motorsports fan, it might be worth checking out Crystal Motor Speedway a little to the north of Carson City. It’s a fairly small outfit, but the races are interesting, and since the drivers are mostly from the area, it retains a family-friendly atmosphere with fans coming to cheer on their neighbors.

When you get a camper rental in Carson City, you may find the restaurant options to be a bit limited. You’ll find basic diner food, pizza shops, and a couple of chain fast food outlets; if you’re feeling picky about your dining options, consider setting up a more extensive camp kitchen, choose some unique recipes, and go wild with your grocery shopping.

When you need to fuel up your RV rental in Carson City, head to the intersection of Cleveland and Mt. Hope Road, as this is where most of the service stations are located. Some of them when even allow you empty your RV tanks.
