Nantucket is a New England paradise in a world all its own, an island 30 miles south of the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts and 80 miles southeast of New Bedford. The island got its name from its Algonquin name, which means, “faraway island,” and Nantucket has that sensation of being otherworldly. The island sits 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and you'll need to take a ferry to reach this hotspot destination.

Wampanoag Natives inhabited the island until 1641 when English settlers took over and began to use the island as a whaling hub. However, in the mid-1800s, a variety of factors led to the decline of the island and many people left for the mainland. However, 100 years later, people returned to the island and found that many of the historic buildings from the 1700s and 1800s were still standing, and so Nantucket is regarded as one of the best preserved historic New England seaport towns.

There isn’t a regular public transportation system on the island. However, in the summer months, the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority operates shuttle buses that go to some of the island’s most popular destinations.

When you book an RV in Nantucket County, you will get to enjoy the pristine beaches, the beautiful blue waters, and the streets lined with historic Cape Cod-style homes and buildings. Whether you plan to swim in the Atlantic, enjoy shopping in the various boutiques, or indulge in some fresh local seafood, your voyage to Nantucket will be truly magical.

Discover Nantucket

The Great Outdoors

Near the center of the island is the Nantucket State Forest. Head here with the Nantucket RV rental and you can enjoy your day among the green pastures and pine trees or bike down the trail that cuts through the forest. If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, you can enjoy a game of disc golf at the Nantucket Disc Golf Course, located within the park grounds.

Back on the mainland, in the southwestern corner of Cape Cod, is the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge in Mashpee. At the refuge, you’ll be able to explore the unique ecosystem of Waquoit Bay. Just shy of 6,000 acres, the refuge is made up of salt marshes, freshwater marshes, cedar swamps, and even those famed cranberry bogs. As you wander the trails, you might spot a wild rabbit, see some aquatic wildlife, or even see some rare waterfowl.

If you’re already on the Cape and are looking to relax in the sun, then head to the Upper Cape to the Cape Cod National Seashore in Wellfleet. For 40 miles, the protected land covers white sandy beaches, marshes, and even pine forests. You can enjoy a kayak or canoe ride through the marshes, explore the lighthouses, and learn more about the history of the local area at the on-site museum.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV in Nantucket, make sure you find an RV park or campground to set up and rest up. Luckily enough, there are a few options on Cape Cod worth considering, though you may need to spend some time on a ferry to reach your destination.

On the south side of Cape Cod in Dennis Port is the Campers Haven RV Resort. At Campers Haven, on-site amenities include full hookup sites, restroom and shower facilities, and laundry facilities. Guests will also have access to a convenience store and a variety of recreational activities, such as miniature golf and kayaking.

Also on the south side of Cape Cod in Bass River is the Bass River Trailer Park. At Bass River, guests will have electrical hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and Wi-Fi, and the park is pet-friendly.

Explore the City

When you book a motorhome rental in Nantucket, make sure you spend some time exploring the local area. With so much history filling the streets of this quaint and picturesque vacation destination, you will be amiss not to learn more about it.

If you want to learn more about the historic industry of the island, you can spend part of your day at the Whaling Museum. The museum also doubles as a local history museum. Housed in a mid-19th-century candle factory, the museum houses a whale skeleton, art exhibits, and historical documents and artifacts showcasing Nantucket’s history.

For those with a passion for first-hand history, you can visit the Jethro Coffin House. Built in 1686, the Jethro Coffin House is the oldest home on Nantucket and is one of the oldest homes in Massachusetts. You can walk through the rooms of the home, which have been decorated to echo their original design, and even stroll through the herb and vegetable garden that is maintained in the same manner it would’ve been in the 1600s.

If you want to have a quintessential New England experience, you can head to the east side of the island to Sankaty Head Light. You will get beautiful photos and enjoy scenic overlooks of the Nantucket beaches and water. In the warmer months, you can climb up to the top of the lighthouse for an even better view.

When you rent an RV in Nantucket, you will spend so much time exploring that you’re going to work up quite the appetite. To try the local flavors, find the closest fish fry shop and sit down to a plate piled with fried fish, shrimp, scallops, clams, and almost any seafood you could want. Or maybe, try a hearty and flavorful lobster roll instead.

When you book an RV rental in Nantucket, you'll find plenty of gas stations and grocery stores on the island when you need to restock and refuel. There are plenty of gas station and grocery store options on the Cape Cod mainland, too.
