Straddling Baltimore and Harford County, White Hall is a tiny community that’s developed at the site of a historic grist mill. It’s located along the famous Northern Central Railroad Trail that hugs the banks of the Gunpowder River while being within easy access of recreational reserves and the bright lights of Baltimore.
White Hall’s origins lie in the late-18th century when the grist mill was established, with a post office and antique store clustered in the village heart today. Its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to surrounding sites make White Hall an ideal destination to rent an RV for those wanting to explore everything Baltimore County has to offer.
Pick up your RV rental in White Hall and spend a day relaxing on the shores of Loch Raven Reservoir. There are miles of hiking trails to explore along the shores, with the park also popular with birdwatchers for its sightings of blue jays, bald eagles, and woodpeckers. In addition to picnic tables, there’s also an on-site fishing center where you can rent kayaks and fishing equipment for luring smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, and northern pike.
Another popular fishing destination in the region is the Prettyboy Reservoir Park, which lies just 10 miles west of White Hall. Try your luck at catching crappie, sunfish, and bass in the dam waters or follow one of the numerous hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the surrounding park. A highlight of the area is the Gunpowder Falls, with water flowing through here from the Prettyboy Reservoir to the Loch Raven Reservoir.
If you’re a green thumb, don’t miss a visit to the Ladew Topiary Gardens, which is set across various garden “rooms” that are dedicated to a single theme. You can stretch your legs along the scenic 1.5-mile nature trail or just admire the outstanding topiary for which the gardens are renowned. In addition to its green space, the estate features a large residence dating back to the late-18th century that is open to the public and beautifully decorated with period furnishings.
Pick up your motorhome rental in White Hall and you can drive north to the Merry Meadows Recreation Farm, a family-friendly RV destination with a swimming pool, playground, and miniature golf course. It’s surrounded by nature trails that you can explore directly from your RV site while offering amenities that include bathrooms and laundry rooms.
Or, you can drive east to one of the full hookup sites at the Bar Harbor RV Park, which overlooks the Bush River. There’s an outdoor pool and children’s playground, as well as a fishing pier that will appeal to anglers. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the adjacent marina or just take advantage of the complimentary Wi-Fi.
If you want to be closer to Baltimore, consider booking a camper rental in White Hall and pulling into one of the full hookup sites at the Orems Trailer Park, a long-term residential RV park that also has a handful of overnight sites. This pet-friendly destination offers shaded sites and well-maintained roads for accessing them.
There are also a couple of Walmart stores nearby where you may be able to set up camp for a night or two with the store manager’s permission.
Park your RV rental near White Hall and set out to explore the village on foot, stopping at the historic grist mill complex of Ivory Mills. It comprises six 19th-century structures that include an old barn, chicken house, and mill, as well as the ruins of a stone spring house and the frame of a Federal-era covered bridge. Learn about its establishment as a grist mill in 1781 and the families that once lived here, with the mill functioning well into the 1920s.
White Hall is located on the Northern Central Railroad Trail, which runs along the abandoned railroad corridor from Cockeysville in Maryland to the border with Pennsylvania. The 20-mile-long trail can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback, and it's also pet-friendly if you’ve got a dog in tow. It’s a pleasant way to explore the rural landscapes and charming towns that dot the route, which makes up just a small section of the 3,000-mile long East Coast Greenway.
Prefer a day in the big city? Head south to Baltimore to wander around Inner Harbor and experience life on-board the 19th-century USS Constellation. Get up close to local marine life at the National Aquarium or discover how “The Star-Spangled Banner” was born at Fort McHenry. There are outstanding museums, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, and plenty of eateries serving the city’s most famous dish - blue crab.
While White Hall has its own post office, you’ll need to make the five-minute drive into Hereford to find grocery stores and gas stations. Alternatively, you can drive to the farmers’ market in nearby Monkton or head farther out to Rosedale’s shopping center
